My First Love Was a Mirror

How I stopped running from my reflection and learned to date the girl who survived every version of me

By sonuPublished 5 months ago • 3 min read

For 23 years, I had an enemy. She lived in my bathroom. My bedroom. Every shop window I passed. She had my eyes. My scars. My failures written across her face. She was my first love. And I hated her.The Girl in the Glass. I was 8 when I first learned to flinch at mirrors. “you look fat now,” an aunt said at a wedding, pinching my cheek. The mirror agreed. I was 14 when I learned to avoid them. Acne, braces, “you’d be pretty if.” The mirror kept receipts

.I was 19 when I smashed one. Anxiety attack at 2 AM. I looked up and saw her — the girl who couldn’t get out of bed, who failed her exam, who got left on read. I threw my hairbrush. The glass broke. She broke with it. I thought that was the end. It wasn’t. Because you can’t outrun a mirror. You carry her everywhere. The Day I Stopped RunningI was 22. Therapy. My therapist said something stupid: “Sit with yourself for 5 minutes a day. Just look in the mirror. No judgment.”I laughed. Then cried. Then tried. Day 1: 10 seconds. I looked away.

Day 7: 1 minute. I saw my dark circles and called her tired.

Day 30: 5 minutes. I saw my dark circles and called her human. That was the first time I didn’t introduce my first love with an insult.Dating the Girl in the MirrorYou don’t fall in love with a mirror overnight. You date her. Awkwardly.

First date: I brushed my hair while looking at her. Not at my phone. Not at the floor. At her. She looked surprised.

Second date: I said “good morning” out loud. To myself. Felt insane. Did it anyway.

Third date: I asked her what she needed. She said “water” and “sleep” and “stop calling me ugly.” I listened.Worst date: I had a panic attack. Looked in the mirror mid-sob. Snot, tears, mascara everywhere. Old me would’ve said “you’re pathetic.”

New me — my first love — just said “breathe.” So I did.Hundredth date: I bought her flowers. Put them next to the mirror. She smiled. I smiled back. For the first time, we smiled together. Why Your First Love Should Be a MirrorWe spend years chasing love in other people. In texts. In likes. In “he said, she said.”But the longest relationship you’ll ever have is with the person in your mirror. She was there for your first heartbreak. Your first failure

. Your first “I can’t do this anymore.” She’s seen you at your worst — bedhead, breakdown, bare face at 3 AM. And she stayed. The world taught us mirrors are for checking flaws. To fix your eyeliner. To suck in your stomach. To find what’s wrong. I’m teaching you mirrors are for checking in.

To ask “are you okay?” To say “I’m proud of you.” To remember “you survived that day you thought you wouldn’t.”My first love isn’t perfect. She still has anxiety. She still overthinks. She still gets pimples before important days. But she’s mine. And she’s learning to love me back.If You Can’t Look at Her Yet, That’s Okay.

Start small. 5 seconds. Don’t say anything. Just see her. She’s not your enemy. She’s the girl who carried you through every war no one clapped for. She deserves love.

Even if — especially if — no one taught you how to give it to her.Today, I looked in the mirror. I didn’t fix my hair. I didn’t check my skin. I just said, “Hi. Thanks for not giving up on us.” She smiled. I smiled. 23 years late, but we finally fell in love. 💜If this hit you, go find your mirror. Say hi for me. Then drop a 🪞 below. Tell me one thing you’re learning to love about her. We heal together. Always.
