Mistakes I Made and the Love I Lost
I was dating my first girlfriend for two years. Then I went to college and made every mistake possible.
I was dating my first girlfriend for two years. She was my first real love, the person I shared my first serious relationship with, the one who taught me what it meant to be loved and to love someone in return. We had something special. We laughed easily, we understood each other, and we built a foundation of trust that I didn't fully appreciate until I had already destroyed it.
Things started getting rocky when I had to move for my freshman year of college. We were long-distance, and I made a lot of mistakes that first year texting other girls, partying a lot, being a little disrespectful. I told myself it wasn't a big deal. I told myself I was just having fun. I told myself she would never find out. But I knew, deep down, that I was betraying the trust of someone who had never given me a reason to doubt her.
We always bounced back. She forgave me for everything. I apologized and promised to change because I wanted to be who she deserved. And I meant it, at least in the moment. But I didn't actually change. I just got better at hiding it. Fast forward to the beginning of my sophomore year. Still long distance. Still struggling to stay faithful. I was caught texting another girl, and she found out. She broke up with me. She told my mom what I had done. I was humiliated. I was angry at her for exposing me. But deep down, I knew I deserved it.
The next day, she texted me a goodbye paragraph. I blew up her phone. I had my parents go check on her. It was bad. I was scared for her. I didn't know if she was serious or just hurting, but I couldn't take the risk. So I panicked. I involved my parents. I made it bigger than it needed to be.
After a little while, she broke no contact and was mad at me. And I acted like an asshole. I told her off. I told her to stop breaking no contact. I told her I was irritated that she told my mom what I had done. I told her I was annoyed that she threatened suicide. I was cruel. I was defensive. I was scared. But I was also wrong. So wrong.
After some time, I realized that I really messed up. I want her back. The relationship was genuinely good. We only argued when I made mistakes. She was patient with me. This was all my fault.
I replay everything in my head over and over again. I think about the moments when she looked at me with so much trust, and I let her down. I think about the times she forgave me when I didn't deserve it. I think about how patient she was, how understanding, how loving. And I think about how I threw it all away because I couldn't be honest with myself or with her.
I wasn't a bad boyfriend all the time. There were good moments. There was love. There was a connection. But I let my own selfishness and immaturity ruin something that could have lasted. If I were to reach out and apologize, and she genuinely forgave me and wanted to try again, would that be possible? I don't know. And I'm not sure I deserve to know. But it's the question that keeps me up at night.
The truth is, I know I can't just show up and expect her to forgive me. I know I can't promise to change and expect her to believe me. She's heard it all before. She's seen me fail before. I would have to prove it, not just say it. And even then, she might not be willing to take that risk again.
