Report Story

It can be done differently

Here I am. On the right seat of the car, combed, nicely dressed and very lightly made up, heading to the place that will host me for another four years of my life.

I watch my mother drive carefully. The brown curls fall evenly over his shoulders. She holds the steering wheel tight, she looks as excited as I do.

My stomach tightens and my throat is dry. I don't know what awaits me, what kind of people, what kind of subjects and that makes me tense.

My mother grabs my hand and smiles warmly as she does when she feels stressed. I calm down and look in the mirror in front of me. The makeup is perfect and very discreet, the brown curls like my mother's, are placed just as evenly over my shoulders, making my black eyes stand out even more.

I lean my head back and look out the window. The trees seem so quiet and full of purity. Thinking about these, I manage to forget about stress and fall asleep.45

- Atlanta, honey, wake up! I can feel my mother's hand pushing me lightly on my forearm.68

I open my eyes and the light hits me directly in the retina, making me cry. I shake my head trying to recover from what seems to have lasted an eternity and I catch a glimpse of my mother who is smiling warmly at me.

- Are you ready? he asks me and he seems to be trying to hold back his tears.1

I nod and open the door. I get out of the car and look around. It is currently Saturday, which means that I have two days to adjust to the dorm room until classes begin.

I follow my mother inside the huge, pale yellow building.

The corridor is big and white. Despite its appearance, it is quite clean and smells of chlorine.

We arrive in front of room 306 , and my mother takes out the key she received a week ago when she came to register me.

Before she can unlock, the door opens on its own, and on the other side is a short girl with long brown hair and blue eyes. Her outfit is completed by a dark make-up, but which highlights her eyes and by her almost non-existent clothing. She wears a bustier and a skirt a little over the thigh.25

- Hey! she screamed excitedly. You must be Atlanta! he says and hugs his mother.49

"No, my dear, this is Atlanta," my mother says, and pulls me forward to see the brunette girl.1

- Aah, yes, yes. Forgive me, say it and start laughing.

- Atlanta Simons! I say excitedly and hold out my hand.75

"Skylar, but you can call me Sky," she held out her hand, smiling. Delighted.31

- Like that.

After a short introduction, I look at my mother, who twists her nose a little, but not so much as to look rude. When a loud bang is heard from the door and it opens, a group of five boys enter it with bottles of drink in their hands.35

- Sky. We've been waiting for you for ten minutes. What the hell are you doing? cried one of them, passing me without restraint.

"Wait, you idiot!" Can't you see I'm talking to my new roommate? she yells at the blond guy

in front of her.15

My mother looks at me and she seems as horrified and scared as I am because of the situation we are witnessing.7

- Oh! Hi, says the guy approaching me. And what's your name?

"At ... Atlanta," I try to put it out of my mouth, stammering lamentably.

She - the bold and crazy girl of the El-Badboy school type, all the girls fall at her feet, except for her at the beginning. It all starts with a first bet between the two of them ...

Everyone, including Skylar, is dressed more in black and had all sorts of tattoos. It's crazy. I've never seen so many tattoos before.8

- I'm Justin! he interrupts me.42

"Delighted," I say, and we shake hands.

A strange "growl" can be heard from the doorway. I look back and see that there is only one boy left. He's very tall and well-built, his hair is black and a little longer than Justin's, and his eyes are faded green

- Well, we're leaving now. Sorry Atlanta, Skylar tells me.

- See you! exclaimed Justin.

And the guy in the door is rolling his eyes. They all disappear and the door slams behind them.

"I don't think they're nice people," my mother says worriedly. But still, let's not judge them, he smiles at me.

Neither do I, I admit and sit on the empty bed that I think is mine. But I'll get used to it.

"I don't want them to do anything to you ... these people."

"I'll be a good mother," I tell her, and she answers with a faint smile and then starts crying.

"I think I should go," he murmured through his tears.

"Okay," I say, disappointed, trying to control my tears.

"Be careful," he tells me, then goes out the door.17

I was left alone in my new dorm room.

I started to unpack and put everything in its place.

Time passed quickly and the sun was already setting when I finished unpacking. I look at the phone and notice it's seven o'clock.

My attention shifts when I hear a key ringing in the door lock.

I thought it was Sky, but when the door opens, the guy from earlier enters. The one standing in the doorway.

- Where the hell is she? he screamed nervously, smelling strongly of alcohol and mint.

- But ... who is it? I ask scared.

- Sky, who else?

- I don't ... I don't know. I thought he left with you ...

- He ran away, he knows where and he owes me money! he screams again, but this time he punches the wall, making me startle.1

- What are you looking at? he asks and slams into the bed next to him.7

"Nothing," I say, then look away.

"So Atlanta?" the boy's thick, intimidating voice is soon heard.2

- Huh? I do and turn to him.

- You're Atlanta. The well-groomed, well-groomed and well-dressed Mironisita says she changes her tone to an arrogant one and lights a cigarette, quickly filling the smoke chamber.13

- Yeah, I'm Atlanta and no, I'm not myrrh or whatever you said there.

"Aham," he says, rolling his eyes.

I try to ignore him and continue my work until I am interrupted once again.

― Ash.

- Here you go? I ask and turn to him.1

- My name is ... Ash, he stutters.

- Oh. Excited, I tell her excitedly

"Yeah, me, too," he says, rolling his eyes again, slumping back in bed.14

I don't know who this guy is supposed to break into people's rooms like that and he has a key. Skylar probably gave it to her, but what does it matter? I'd like to kick him out, but I can't feel it. I don't even know him. He shouldn't be sitting here.

I am interrupted again when the door slams wide and Skylar enter

- Heeeiiii! exclaimed Sky as he entered the door, followed by another guy.

She's drunk, her eyes are red on the edges. She's clearly drunk.18

- Where the hell have you been, Sky? Ash shouted nervously at her.

- Oh, roll your eyes, calm down!

"You owe me a hundred dollars Sky," Ash says more calmly this time.

I'm looking at the guy in the door. He looks as surprised as I am, but he doesn't say anything. I'm silent too, continuing to watch the scene in front of me.

- Ahh! Get out of here and leave me, Sky raises his voice and hands her a hundred-dollar bill, then pulls her bustier over her head and puts on a pink one - instead of a black one - as if no one is looking at her.

- Let's go, Jeremy.

- Where ... where are you going? I sigh in shame.

- Oh! Do you want to come to a party? he asks me and gives me a warm smile revealing the metal clinging to the skin between his upper lip and front teeth.1

- Uh ... I don't know what to ...

- Ugh! It is obvious that the young lady from the Victorian era will not join us. You just don't want to wrinkle her freshly dressed and disinfected dress, Ash says, looking at me with a smirk, and Jeremy starts laughing at this, making Sky slap him on the shoulder, but I can only bite my lip. nervous downstairs. I watch Ash blow his hair from his face and remember what he just said as they prepare to leave.24

- Do you know anything? I say after which they all come back surprised. I go with you, I say, and I squint at Ash, who frowns clearly and nervously.11

- What a mess! Sky screams enthusiastically, and Ash rolls his eyes to hide his frustration at being wrong.34

I take my bag and go out the door following the three rascals, I would say normally. I look at them and realize that this decision was the biggest mistake I have ever made and I don't make many mistakes.

I sigh as I leave the room I discovered about six hours ago and continue to follow the three.

Skylar and that guy ... Jeremy is talking about the classes they're going to, or not on Monday.

Ash walks with his hands deep in his pockets and shakes his head up and down to remove the hair that falls on his forehead.

I'm staring desperately at this gloomy, weird boy. I try to move my gaze to the other side of the endless corridor, but something won't let me. I stay behind and Ash's thick voice echoes between the four walls that stretch along the dormitory building.3

"Are you going to move that ass faster?" he asks ironically as he tilts his head a millimeter.20

I would normally quarrel with such an arrogant monster, but something doesn't allow me. To be honest, all those tattoos and metals make me stay a bit away from him so I shut up ignoring him and he sighs shaking his head left and right in mockery, but I don't pay attention to him this time either.3

We finally get out of the big dormitory building, and a strong breeze hits me in the face.

Now that I've taken a deep breath in my chest, I'm thinking even more about the fact that I agreed to go to a party who knows where with some people I've only known for a few hours. Hours I spoke up to four times.

We walk through the winding parking lot for about two minutes after which Jeremy takes a key out of his pocket and presses a button making a red truck squeak.

She - the bold and crazy girl of the El-Badboy school type, all the girls fall at her feet, except for her at the beginning. It all starts with a first bet between the two of them ...

"That's the weakness," Jeremy says, tapping on the trunk of the car. Ladies first, say and open both back doors.

I enter on the left and Sky throws himself on the right seat. Ash sits in the right seat and Jeremy in the driver's seat.3

"Hey ... silly," Jeremy says, realizing he's referring to me. Relax, tell me and adjust the rearview mirror so I can see his gaze.

"I will," I say cheerfully, trying to calm myself.

If my mother found out what I was going to do, she'd go crazy. I feel like I shouldn't have done that inside of me, but I had to show these guys that I'm not a smelly person, especially Ash.5

After a journey of about fifteen minutes, the car's engine stops and the three open the doors.

- What are you waiting for? Special invitation? I hear Ash's voice melodramatically again as if I had done who knows what.6

"No, I call it short and cold, and I get out of Jeremy's Volskwagen."

I arrange my dress and put my purse on my shoulder.

- Come on, At! Skylar shouted - which was far in front of me - and I quickened my pace to be at the same level.

When I finally get to Sky I dare to ask her:

- Why At?

- Well why not? I mean ... I like Atlanta, but it's too long. If it bothers you, I won't tell you like that, she says awkwardly and shrugs.

"Oh, no, of course not," I say, and smile at him.

"And ... I'm here," Jeremy broke the silence.

I stare at the large villa in front of me with a large inscription "BØF" ... probably the name of a brotherhood. The door opens, loud music enters one ear and I try to pull out the other, but to no avail.14

We enter the big villa for real and look everywhere. Everywhere I look, I see drunken people, discarded cardboard cups and endless bottles of drink.19

- Come on! I hear Sky yelling at me and shaking my head to come back, and I spot the brunette girl who had yelled at me a minute ago much farther than she had first.

I hurry to reach her and when I do I grab her by the hand and let her guide me through the drunken crowd.

We come to a table around which that guy sits ... Justin, another guy and a blonde girl. They all look like Ash, Jeremy and Skylar.8

I watch the three of them sit next to the others and I see that there is still a free seat left, so I occupy it timidly.

- Who's Sky girl? the other guy asks, smiling and pointing at me.

I tense up and try to stay calm.

- She's...

"Atlanta," Ash says in a relatively calm tone, interrupting Skylar, and she frowns, astonishing me and the others.12

- Atlanta, then.

I nod and extend my hand, smiling foolishly.

- Delighted, I say and the guy smiles and says:

"I'm Alec and the girl here is Josie," he says, pointing to the green-eyed blonde next to him.59

"Delighted," Josie murmured frowning.21

I nod at him trying to convey the idea of politeness, but his expression remains just as nervous.

- How about a short game of Seven Minutes in Paradise? Alec asks cheerfully.6

"Sounds good," the others exclaimed in unison, then burst out laughing.

Justin pulls out an empty bottle of beer and slams it in the middle of the table.

- Am I spinning? he asks, and the others agree.

Justin gives impetus to the bottle and it spins for about a minute, stopping in front of me and his ... Ash ...

Exactly what I was afraid of. I try to dodge and dare to say:

"I'm not playing," I stammered shyly, trying to back away.1

Ash rolls his eyes for the fifth time today and says,1

"Of course she doesn't play ... no one wants to ruin her reputation as a perfect princess," she says, mimicking quotes in the air.

- Oh damn it. Okay, either, I play too, I scream and get up and head to the closet where I think the game will take place.

I see Ash following me and I realize I've hit the spot where I'm going to spend seven minutes with this misogynistic criminal.

There is applause and screams behind us, and Sky's voice makes me calm down when I hear her scream:

- That's how I want you At!

- Heeeiiii! exclaimed Sky as he entered the door, followed by another guy.25

She's drunk, her eyes are red on the edges. She's clearly drunk.18
