A girl

Afraid of being loved

By Mehreen ShakeelPublished 3 years ago • 3 min read

As rain fell from the sky, the heavens unable to contain their tears, each droplet carried with it a profound sense of sadness. Those tears, landing softly on my face, served as a poignant reminder that sometimes, in the face of adversity, all we can do is persist, taking solace in the simple act of breathing and moving forward. It is an undeniable truth that human beings possess a certain inherent selfishness. They are prone to exploiting others for their own gains, yet paradoxically, they require the presence of fellow humans in order to thrive. It is in this delicate balance that the concept of companionship emerges – the realization that living in the company of a single individual can become mundane and lacking in variety, thus giving rise to the creation of families, the formation of friendships, and the emergence of romantic relationships.

There is a unique magic in the realm of love, one that causes the heart to flutter in response to a lover's gaze, that induces blushing through their tender touch, and evokes infectious laughter by way of their silly conversations. Yet, as with all things in life, change is inevitable. In the ebb and flow of time, the bond once cherished may transform, like a shifting tide eroding the familiar contours of the shoreline. The gaze that once brought comfort may now provoke fear, the touch that once felt gentle may lose its tenderness, and the words that once elicited joy may become grating to the ear. Is this not the natural course of human relationships? As circumstances alter, so too do the dynamics between individuals. There may come a point when the love once bestowed upon us no longer satiates our deepest yearnings. And so, driven by an innate longing for more, we embark on a perpetual quest for love, seeking new connections and hoping to find solace in the arms of another.

The thirst for love is insatiable, yet when it is finally within our grasp, an unsettling discomfort often ensues. It is akin to a child who craves a particular toy, but upon obtaining it, feels a sense of restlessness and quickly abandons interest, resorting to its destruction. No tears are shed over the loss, as the novelty fades and the desire wanes. However, when that cherished toy goes missing from their collection, the tears flow freely, and the longing to recreate those joyful moments resurfaces. Such is the nature of my experience with love. Initially, the affection I felt for a certain person brought me immense joy, but as time went on, it began to inflict a deep sense of pain. Day after day, my longing for him intensified, consuming me to the point where I found myself losing sight of my own identity amidst the overwhelming desire to possess his love. It is my own culpability, a failure to appreciate the value of what was once mine, that I must confront. Yet, the past stands as a guidepost, a reminder of lessons learned, rather than a script to be repeated mindlessly. To accept that this love will always hurt me for a long time and that I will have to live with the it. The memories and everything and wont be able to die soon is kinda sad coz life is always unpredictable and as time is passing by I am finding my self resistant to love just as Daya Nadan said in her poetry.

Many reasons there are for this love she fears,

For it can either make you happy or impale you with spears,

It depends on your heart, personality and skill,

To find a partner who won’t throw your heart down a hill,
