The Earlybird Catches the... Winger?

The summer transfer window is like fine wine, it gets better with time, but also too much consumption early doors can make you feel a bit dizzy. Well, thankfully this year almost every club in England’s top flight has taken a teetotal approach to signing players this summer. But which clubs have snuck a sneaky shandy? Not much has happened yet, but probably the biggest deal of the summer so far has been Bournemouth’s signing of Bristol City’s young left-back Lloyd Kelly for £13 MM. In recent seasons Eddie Howe hasn’t been afraid to spend on promising British talent, but signings like Jordon Ibe for £15MM and Dominic Solanke for £20MM haven’t paid off as of yet. However Kelly, who was at one point a target for Champions League-winner Liverpool, comes with bags of potential. United’s Unlimited Spending

In the past few years Man Utd haven’t been afraid to spend big on getting the big names. £90 MM for Pogba, £75 MM for Lukaku, £60 MM for Di Maria, and £35 MM for Sanchez. But how many of them have paid off? It’s clear that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a task on his hands to rebuild the squad, and it’s been hinted that a change of approach may be in order. A move for Swansea’s young winger Daniel James seems to be sorted, and in recent days, United has been linked to Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, after an impressive breakout season in South London. But with a £40 MM price tag on the young right-back’s head, it seems like due to this inflated market, Man Utd will still have to pay a premium to get the players they need to transform their side, and ultimately their fortunes.

Kenny’s Westphalian Adventure

Everton, Wigan Athletic, Oxford United, Schalke 04, spot the odd one out. Funny thing is that there isn’t, not if you’re Jonjoe Kenny. The England-U21 international, who has featured for boyhood club Everton 31 times in the Premier League, has recently signed for Schalke on a season long loan. In what could be seen as one of the more unusual transfers of the window, this seems a little less ridiculous once you find out former Huddersfield boss, David Wagner, is their manager, and you remember the whole host of English players who have gone to play in the Bundesliga (Jadon Sancho, Reiss Nelson and Reece Oxford). However, not wanting to be outdone in the weirdness stakes, Plymouth’s Irish winger, Graham Carey, has turned down a new deal at the recently-relegated side to join Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.

Free Keepers

Whilst some prices are high, the market can still be full of good value. Just look at how many goalkeepers who have switched clubs for absolutely nothing. Lossl has joined Everton from Huddersfield, whereas West Ham has been diving right into the bargain basement, pinching David Martin from rivals Milwall, and bringing in Roberto from Espanol. Considering they released Adrian on a free transfer, it seems like the hammers have secured a two-for-one deal on goalkeepers.
