Thomas Häsler, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler, and a few other players were not just commonly recognized names in Germany in the 90’s, but these players were also exceptionally renowned all throughout the world for their excellent display on the field of play, especially during the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

The German team was all around ‘groomed’ and , exceptionally strong and fantastic on the field. Among them was number 10 man- – Lothar Matthäus. This player made some great memories playing for his club, and then moved that performance to the FIFA World Cup in 1990.

At the time, the German Bundesliga was the topmost league in the world, with everyone craving for it. Lothar Matthäus- who was the Midfielder and Sweeper, also played for Inter Milan from 1988 to 1992. He won the Italian league title in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991.

During the FIFA World Cup in 1990, Matthäus was excellent, and helped his German ‘Machine’ team to lift the trophy at the tournament – and was even named European Footballer of the Year.

In 1991, Lothar Matthäus was named the first FIFA World Player of the Year, and remains the only German to have gotten the honor. He was also included in the Ballon d’Or Dream Team in 2020.

During the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the midfielder who was also a defender, was so solid in the team, and ensured he utilized his qualities as the captain of his team to control the midfield and defense.

Matthäus was extremely fit, savvy, and had an incredible shot that could beat any goalkeeper. He had a significant role to play as the skipper of the German team at the Italia ’90 Word Cup, so he was extremely yearning. He was the only German player to at any point win the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Lothar Matthaus is the greatest midfielder to ever grace the football game. He played in five FIFA World Cups and holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a solitary player.

During his active days, Lothar Matthäus played for a several clubs including: Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and some other teams.

Matthäus held the record of having played in five FIFA World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998), more than some other outfield major part in men’s football, until the 2018 World Cup, where Mexico’s Rafael Márquez equalled his record.

He holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a single player (25 games), and furthermore won UEFA Euro 1980, and played in the 1984, 1988 and 2000 UEFA European Championships. In 1999, at 38 years, Matthäus was again voted German Footballer of the Year, having recently won the honor in 1990.

Matthäus is the most capped German player ever, retiring with an aggregate of 150 appearances (83 for West Germany) in 20 years, with 23 goals. Matthäus is a member of the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living football players picked by Pelé.
