All-Time Premier League: Huddersfield Town
For the ninth instalment in this series, we cross the Pennines to Huddersfield – an unlikely location, one might think, for one of the great football clubs; and based on what has happened in the Premier League era, or indeed since the Second World War, one would be right. This West Yorkshire market and mill town, the birthplace of Rugby League, is a stronghold of egg chasing, and its soccer team has spent only two seasons in the modern Premier League, and only seven in the top division of English football (whatever one wants to call it) since its relegation in 1952. It has not finished as high as second, never mind first, in top-level League or Cup competition since 1938. But its inclusion in the All-Time Premier League is not a mistake. For a few years in the 1920s, Huddersfield could claim to be the centre of soccer in Great Britain, and possibly in the world, thanks to a team that had almost not existed at all.

In the shadow of Stalin
A Soviet fighter jet launches itself from the stand over the away team’s bench. Players warm up amid heavy artillery. Tanks patrol the car park and, legend has it, there’s a top secret metro line to the Kremlin down below. Amid the rusting military hardware there’s an eerie hum from a PA system long out of use. Welcome to Moscow’s forgotten stadium.
Hebburn Town's transformation
When Hebburn Town run out at Wembley on Monday in the FA Vase Final, it will be the latest memorable moment in a remarkable sporting turnaround. Less than five years ago, the Tyneside club was on the brink of collapse and the future seemed bleak.
If the news were about someone else, maybe it would have seemed weird to me that someone started yelling, in the middle of the street, about the death of someone famous. But this time . . . No. Actually, everyone else stopped walking, too. Some looked at their cell phones, checking the news for themselves, as if they hoped the man was just crazy and nothing had actually happened. But something had happened.
The Story Of Pele
He holds records for the most FIFA World Cup wins, the youngest player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup game, and the most career goals in football, but his fans don't need numbers to know he is the king of football. I put Pele right up here, there's no comparison.
Balls! Súper Ridículo!
My friend was annoyed. The English use the word “exorcised,” but that’s a tricky word to use here because folks here might assume you’re talking about a ritual from the ‘70s classic horror flick The Exorcist.
How the Premier League is Trying to Save the Planet
April 2021 was NOT a good month for the leading football clubs in England. Despite the project now being in stasis, the hullabaloo around the proposed European Super League (ESL) has caused irreparable damage to the clubs involved. Not least to the relationships between those teams and their fan base.
Injuries are part and parcel of the beautiful game, football. From the niggling injuries that hinder players for a few weeks at a time to the horror challenges that put careers at risk, all fans have those moments of angst when they think back to the injuries that shook them to the core.
