How I saved the cat
One rainy evening, I was walking home from work, my mind preoccupied with the events of the day. The streets were nearly empty, with most people having sought shelter from the downpour. As I hurried along the narrow alleyway that served as a shortcut to my apartment, a faint, desperate sound caught my attention. I paused, straining to hear above the din of the rain. There it was again – a soft, plaintive mew. My heart skipped a beat. I had always had a soft spot for animals, especially cats. I followed the sound, which led me to a small cardboard box partially hidden behind a dumpster. Inside the box, drenched and shivering, was a tiny, gray kitten. Its eyes, wide and frightened, locked onto mine, as if pleading for help. Without a second thought, I scooped the kitten up, holding it close to my chest to provide some warmth. "We're going to get you out of this rain, little one," I murmured reassuringly. I hurried home, holding the kitten protectively under my jacket. Once inside my apartment, I gently placed the kitten on a soft towel. I then fetched a small bowl of warm water and carefully cleaned the mud from its fur. The kitten, still trembling, seemed to relax slightly under my gentle touch. I dried the kitten and wrapped it in a dry towel, creating a cozy little nest on the couch. I then set about finding some food. A quick raid of my fridge produced some leftover chicken, which I shredded into tiny pieces. The kitten, still wary but clearly starving, nibbled at the food, gradually eating more as it began to feel safer. Over the next few days, I devoted myself to caring for the kitten. I took it to the vet, where it was confirmed that the little cat was in good health, just in need of some tender loving care. I named the kitten Misty, inspired by the stormy evening on which I had found her. Misty quickly adapted to her new home. She became more playful and affectionate, often curling up on my lap as I read or watched TV. The bond between us grew stronger each day, and I couldn't imagine life without her. One day, while playing with Misty, I thought about how that simple act of kindness had brought so much joy into both our lives. I realized that rescuing Misty had been one of the most rewarding experiences I had ever had. It was a reminder of the profound impact that even small acts of compassion can have. Misty and I became inseparable. Our story was a testament to the idea that sometimes, the most unexpected moments can lead to the most beautiful relationships. And so, from that rainy night forward, both Misty and I found solace and happiness in each other's company, forever grateful for the chance encounter that had brought us together.

Descent: Part Nine. Content Warning.
Around us, the inky darkness muttered. Grinding choking sounds, like sharp stones being scrapped across glass, crept out of the shadows beyond the flare of my flashlight to wrap around my brain. I knew what the beasts looked like now, their grey-scaled, almost human faces surrounded me in my mind’s eye, growing steadily closer, clawed, webbed hands grasped at me.
