The Last Patient of the Abandoned Mental Hospital
Blackwood Mental Hospital had been abandoned for nearly thirty years, but the stories surrounding it refused to die. The massive psychiatric institution stood alone on the edge of a dense forest, its broken windows staring across the landscape like empty eyes. Local residents avoided the area after dark, and countless urban legends claimed the hospital was haunted. Some people reported hearing screams from the upper floors late at night. Others claimed they had seen figures moving behind windows in a building that no longer had electricity. As a journalist specializing in paranormal investigations and abandoned places, I had heard dozens of similar stories before. Most of them turned out to be nothing more than exaggerated rumors. I believed Blackwood Mental Hospital would be no different.

The Voice Coming From the Empty Room
The first time I heard the voice, I assumed it was the wind. The house was old enough to make almost any sound imaginable. Floorboards creaked when nobody walked on them. Doors shifted slightly in their frames during cold nights. Pipes groaned behind the walls as if something were moving through them. After inheriting the property from my grandfather, I had spent nearly a month living there alone, and I had become accustomed to its strange noises. That was why I didn't pay much attention when I heard what sounded like someone speaking upstairs.

The Last Patient of the Abandoned Mental Hospital
The first thing people told me about Blackwood Mental Hospital was simple: don't go inside after sunset. The building had stood on the outskirts of town for nearly eighty years. Its broken windows stared across the surrounding forest like empty eyes, and its crumbling walls had become the subject of countless local legends. Some claimed they heard screams coming from the upper floors at night. Others swore they had seen lights moving through rooms that had no electricity. I never believed any of those stories. As a freelance journalist, I had spent years investigating supposedly haunted places. Most turned out to be abandoned buildings filled with exaggerated rumors and overactive imaginations. Blackwood, I assumed, would be no different. That assumption led me to the biggest mistake of my life.

My Reflection Started Living Its Own Life
The first time I noticed something was wrong, it lasted less than a second. I was brushing my teeth before work, staring absentmindedly into the bathroom mirror. It was an ordinary morning with the same routine I had followed for years. The same apartment. The same sink. The same tired face staring back at me. Then I blinked, and my reflection blinked a fraction of a second later. It was so subtle that I almost convinced myself I had imagined it. I stood frozen for a moment, toothbrush still in my hand, staring at the mirror. Nothing happened. My reflection stared back exactly as it should. Feeling foolish, I finished getting ready and left for work.

Sin Eater. Content Warning.
They brought her into the circular building through the opposite door he had come in. Leading her by that damn collar she wore for the purpose of the ceremony. As was the nature of the beast, she would look down, avoiding his eyes until she could not stand alone- then she would reluctantly lock eyes with him. It tore at his soul, he wanted to help her through the whole battle, he was strong enough. His jaw clenched, muscles rippling in his cheek as he ground his teeth. The escorts of the sinner followed her in, with Clement trudging behind. He was a wealthy merchant in the city, well liked, well respected, and he had more than enough to buy out the minimal punishment. But it was his 5th time he had dalliance with a young girl, so he would now be subjected to the consuming of his… appetites. Clements stood in front of Dawn- her collar was now fixed to a post they would ground the magic she channeled. Giving her a place to push extra power if her control of it weakened when she was flayed. The judge was reading through ceremonial bull shit, and Jacob willed her to look up earlier, but her head stayed resolutely fixed on Clements shoes. “And for the taking of a virgin, before her coming of age, being the fifth offense.” He was concluding the ceremony as they wrapped Dawns hands palm down to Clements hands. “It is the will of Kyn that 25 stripes must be had but 5 felt- each unfelt costing 5 Rayen.” No, Jacob’s heart caught in his chest. He could feel the anxiety rising, 20 stripes, damn Clements. He barely registered the money changer grabbing Clement’s coin purse and laying the 100 Rayen between the two in the ceremonial plate, “to be consumed leaving you vacant ever more.” The judge finished, slamming the tomb closed and stepping back to witness that everything proceeded as necessary.

Fairy Child
Moonlight glinted in the night. The sparkle of wings that were invisible except for the cascade of colors that they splashed across the trees lining the grove. She held her breath, holding perfectly still under the bushes. Legends said that you could become a child of fairy if they trusted you to appear. Legends said they would grant you magical abilities. And everyone told her the fairies didn’t exist but she knew the legends were more truth than the feeble world they could see. Silver moonbeams shifted across her hazel eyes from the edge of the toad stools that grew in clusters among the roots. They were right at her fingertips. “Please let me see you,” she thought so loudly she was sure that they had to hear. She knew that legend said if you entered the toad stool ring- you gave the fairies power over you. But it was also probably her best chance to see them. She scanned the toadstool, still hardly breathing. Her eyes traced the full circle until she found herself staring down at her hands. Watching her left-hand lift, trembling. Almost without her consent it rose slowly over the toadstool and with a resounding motion it landed inside the circle. She leaned across the toadstool line, acutely aware that the glimmer of lights had sparkled across the circle far from her as they could. There she froze- unable to leave, but too scared to push farther. Glancing to and fro at the glinting lights that were slowly, but very certainly moving closer toward her again. “PLEASE,” she screamed in her head. Then she felt tiny feet walking up her ring finger. Hardly daring to look, she peaked down at her hand. There stood a small human-like creature. Its wings looked like sparkling glass, etched with lacy designs, shifting from blue to green that almost glowed with its own bit of moon light. Its facial features were shifted to a beauty that outpaced human features; long, slanted, almond eyes, narrow nose, and full lips. As she stared, it flitted its wings, and with a twirl grew to her size, sitting cross legged in front of her. Its nose pushing gently against her own. Its hair twisted around its face and a jeweled golden circlet rested across its brow.
