They lay there in silence, barely holding each other. Both of them were crying, but neither noticed. Perhaps they did, but lacked the courage even to dare say anything. Important things remained unsaid. Neither uttered a word.

I discreetly wiped my tears as soon as they began to fall, so they wouldn’t land on her hand resting just below my neck.

A quiet sniffle escaped her now and then, a desperate necessity just to catch her breath. She wondered if that had betrayed her.

Had she noticed that I was crying? Maybe I hoped she did. My mind was wild, spiraling all over the place. I was trying to connect strings that were causing chaos in my head… That was when she pulled me from my thoughts, quietly saying, ‘And this is a reward.’ I was silent. I didn’t know how to respond. So I didn’t, and we both drifted off to sleep, carrying the weight of heavy thoughts.

What happened there only silence saw.
