Two weeks had passed since the beginning of the zombie outbreak, and Lisa and Mike hadn’t left their house except to forage for food. She had been babysitting her son’s children the day it started, and her son and his wife joined them shortly after. Other than them, she hadn’t seen anyone else in her family, let alone her friends, since before it all started.

Standing at windows, they watched what used to be their neighbors attacking cows, chasing dogs, or trying to eat anything that moved. Seeing the farmers attacking cows they cared for all year was deplorable, but witnessing the zombie kids chasing their parents down the road was even worse. Lisa was glad that her friend, Sharon, had loaned them a rifle before all this mess had started.

Lisa watched as Mike walked into the room.

“You know, hon, we must forage for supplies. What do you say to Trace and me heading out and checking our neighbors' houses to see what is left for us to use?” Mick asked her.

“I know; I just hate to get separated right now, Mike,” Lisa responded. Then she added, “But the grandkids have to eat. I think Megan and I will be ok while y’all are gone. But promise to come home to us, to be safe.”

“I promise, Lisa. We’ll be back,” Mike said as he and Trace prepared to scavenge.

“Make sure you do,” Lisa said to both of them as they headed out the door.

Later that evening, after Mike and Trace had returned and had dinner, they decided to put the kids to bed, so the day's events could be discussed without them listening in.

Mike and Trace talked of zombies wandering around that they had seen. Most used to be neighbors and friends. In a couple of houses, they went to, they had to kill zombies just to get out of the house. A few places had people still alive. At these houses, the guys left some of the supplies they had found.

As for supplies, they didn’t need to worry too much about meat since the wild game was plentiful for them to hunt. Fruits and vegetables were going to be another story. The guys would go out, forage as much as possible, and scavenge where it was safe. Lisa and Megan would preserve or dehydrate everything they could. Then the girls would ration out the food so there’d be enough when they needed it.

Once everyone agreed, everyone went to bed.

Lisa was trying to find a news program on some station, but most were broadcasting nothing but static. The few airing anything were mostly old reruns of Gillagan’s Island. Good Grief: How could three seasons of one show seem like an eternity? Finally, she came upon a news program that stated the country was under red alert and that the government was warning everyone not to approach the infected for any reason.

“No, shit, Sherlock,” Lisa said as she shut the TV off and threw the remote on the coffee table.

That’s when Lisa heard a dog barking shrilly. She got up and went to her front door to see what was happening.

Outside was a dog dancing around two meth zombies on her porch. Slamming the front door, Lisa ran and grabbed the rifle.

“Megan, we have a couple of the creatures on the porch! Check out the back door!” Lisa screamed on her way back to the front porch.

Getting to the front door, she slammed it open and shot the first zombie right between the eyes. Lisa pulled the trigger again after pulling the gun down on the other zombie’s ear.

“Come on, Rover, get in here, mutt,” Lisa said.

At that exact moment, Megan hollered out, “Hey, Mom! We have a problem back here!”

Lisa and the dog ran to the back door, where Megan was trying to keep some more zombies from coming in the back door.
