A Campfire Tale
They were in a circle in a clearing in the woods. The fire was burning, drinks had been taken, marshmallows toasted, and the stories started.
One told a tale of a group of friends sitting round a campfire late into the night. There were rumours about the forest they were in the middle of, but they were young and could take care of themselves. The longer they sat, the more they began to feel that something was off, but they weren't sure what.
It was only when they tried to move and realised they couldn't. Shoots had come up from the ground and entered their skin, though they hadn't felt it, and part of the reason was that their flesh was turning to wood.
Before long, all the bodies around the campfire were lumps of wood, and sparks flew out, landing on the wooden bodies and catching fire.
When a search was made by the police and parents, there was no sign of their children, just the scattered ashes of the campfire.
The forest was evil.
The group listening and the storyteller were creeped out by the tale.
Then, when they tried to move, they realised they couldn't.
They were turning to wood.
They then realised that this was the same forest and began to scream, knowing that they too would soon be nothing but ash.
