Why Do We Often Think Life Will End Soon? – An Islamic Perspective

In Islam, the thought that life is short or nearing its end is not uncommon and it’s not without purpose. This feeling is deeply connected to our spiritual nature, the concept of Akhirah (the Hereafter), and the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. 1. Life Is a Temporary Test The Qur’an reminds us repeatedly that life is fleeting. Allah says: > “Every soul shall taste death.” — (Qur’an 3:185) This verse keeps believers aware that this world is not eternal. Our time here is a test a preparation for the real, everlasting life in the Hereafter. 2. The Prophet (ﷺ) Taught Urgency The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: > “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler.” — (Bukhari) This hadith teaches Muslims to live lightly detached from worldly obsession and stay focused on doing good before our time ends. 3. Remembrance of Death (Dhikr al-Mawt) In Islam, regularly remembering death is not morbid it’s spiritually uplifting. It reminds us to: Repent often Avoid sins Value each moment This feeling that life may end soon can push us toward sincere faith and better deeds, as Allah loves those who return to Him with a clean heart. 4. Signs of the Hour Muslims are also taught about the Signs of the Last Day, which can increase awareness of time running short. However, Islam emphasizes hope and action, not fear or despair. --- In Conclusion Thinking that life may end soon is a mercy from Allah. It softens our hearts, turns our focus back to Him, and reminds us that this world is not our final home.
