The Taxi Driver

The taxi driver refused to take my money. I understood why years later.

By GoldenSpeechPublished about a month ago • 1 min read

I was nineteen and completely broke.

One night, I needed a taxi to get home.

When we arrived, I reached into my pocket.

I had barely enough money.

The driver looked at me.

"Keep it."

I insisted.

He refused.

"One day, you'll understand."

I thought he was simply being generous.

I thanked him and walked home.

I never expected to see him again.

Years passed.

I graduated.

I found a good job.

Eventually, I started earning more money than I had ever imagined.

One evening, I stopped at a grocery store.

In front of me was an elderly man.

He was counting coins at the register.

He didn't have enough money.

The cashier began removing items from his bag.

Without thinking, I stepped forward.

"I'll pay for it."

The man looked at me.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

I paid.

As I walked outside, I suddenly remembered the taxi driver.

"One day, you'll understand."

I finally did.

He hadn't been giving away money.

He had been passing something forward.

Someone had probably helped him once.

He helped me.

And years later, without even realizing it, I helped someone else.

That's when I understood that kindness isn't always a transaction.

Sometimes it's a chain.

One person helps another.

That person helps someone else.

And eventually, the kindness travels farther than anyone could have imagined.
