The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides: My Honest Review After 3 Sleepless Nights

I finished The Silent Patient at 2:13am on a Wednesday and I confess my hands were shaking. Not from coffee. From the ending.

I started reading The Silent Patient on my couch. It was Sunday. Rain outside. I had a blanket and tea. I said I will read one chapter. Just one. Then I looked at the clock. Three hours passed. I was still on the couch. My tea was cold. My back hurt. But I could not stop. You know that feeling when a book grabs you and doesn't let go? This was that.

The Silent Patient is by Alex Michaelides. It is about Alicia Berenson. She is a painter. She is famous. One night she shoots her husband five times in the face. Then she stops talking. She never says a word again. She goes to a mental hospital. A therapist named Theo wants to make her talk. That is the story. Simple on the outside. Crazy on the inside.

The Woman Who Never Talks

Look, let's talk about Alicia. She is silent for the whole book. Like literally silent. You would think that would be boring. It is not. It is scary. I kept trying to imagine what was in her head. To be honest, I felt uncomfortable reading her diary pages. It felt like I was reading something I should not read.

Theo is the therapist. He is obsessed with Alicia. He has his own problems too. Marriage problems. Past trauma. He is not a perfect hero. He makes bad choices. I liked that. Most thriller heroes are too perfect. Theo is a mess. Just like us.

And the hospital? The author worked in a mental hospital before. You can feel it. It is not fake Hollywood crazy. It is real. Cold. Quiet. Sad.

My Unpopular Opinion That Will Make People Mad

Here is my hot take. I think the twist is overrated. Yes, I said it. Everyone says the twist in The Silent Patient is the best twist ever. I think it is good. But it is not perfect. I guessed part of it on page 150.

And also, Theo is a better character than Alicia. I know Alicia is the famous silent patient everyone talks about. But Theo? His story is darker. His wife Kathy and what happens with her. That part got me more. I was on the bed. Reading about Theo. Thinking about my own relationship. For like 20 minutes I forgot about Alicia completely.

So yeah. The twist is good. But the middle part where Theo investigates Kathy? That was my favorite. I know most people will disagree. Come fight me in the comments.

Scorecard: My Honest Numbers

Plot: 5/5 - The Silent Patient has a plot that will not let you put it down. I read it in two days. I never do that.

Characters: 4.5/5 - Alicia is iconic. Silent but you hear her. Theo is flawed and real. The side characters in the hospital are creepy in a good way.

Writing: 5/5 - Super short chapters. Simple English. Alex Michaelides writes like he is talking to you. No fancy words. You can read it fast.

Pacing: 4/5 - Starts slow for like 30 pages. Then fast. Then super fast at the end. The last 50 pages I read standing up in my kitchen. I could not sit.

My Verdict on The Silent Patient

If you loved The Girl on the Train or Gone Girl, you will love The Silent Patient. If you want a happy book with a happy ending, do not read this. This is not happy. This is dark. It will stay in your head.

I give The Silent Patient 4.5 stars. Not 5 because I guessed part of the twist and that annoyed me. But still, it is one of the best thrillers I read this year. I already bought his second book. That is how much I liked it.

Would I read it again? No. Like The Girl on the Train, the magic only works once. You cannot unread the twist. But would I tell my best friend to read it? Yes. Yesterday I told my sister to read it. She started last night and texted me at midnight: "OMG".
