The Five-Dollar Bill
I found a handwritten message on a five-dollar bill. Ten years later, I discovered who wrote it.

I was buying coffee when the cashier handed me a five-dollar bill as change.
Written on it were four words:
"Don't give up yet."
I thought it was strange.
I kept the bill.
Years later, I had completely forgotten about it.
Then, while cleaning my wallet, I found it again.
The handwriting looked familiar.
I searched online for similar stories.
Eventually, I discovered a social media account where people shared photographs of handwritten messages on money.
One post caught my attention.
A woman had written:
"Don't give up yet."
She explained that she had been struggling financially and had decided to write encouraging messages on bills before spending them.
She had written dozens of them.
"You're closer than you think."
"Keep going."
"Tomorrow might be different."
"Don't give up yet."
I looked at the username.
It seemed familiar.
Then I saw a photograph.
It was the same woman who had worked at the coffee shop where I had received the bill.
I contacted her.
She remembered writing the message.
But she didn't remember the person who eventually received it.
I told her my story.
She replied:
"I never knew whether those messages reached anyone."
I sent her a photograph of the bill.
She immediately recognized it.
She told me that when she wrote those words, she was going through the hardest period of her life.
A decade later, she had built a successful business.
She had completely changed her life.
The five-dollar bill had traveled through hundreds of hands.
But somehow, it had ended up with me.
And those four words arrived at exactly the right moment.
Sometimes we have no idea how far a small act of hope can travel.
