The Call at 3:17 AM

At exactly 3:17 AM, my phone rang every night. Then I discovered who was calling.

For twelve nights, my phone rang at exactly 3:17 AM.

Every time, the number was unknown.

I never answered.

I assumed it was spam.

On the thirteenth night, I finally picked up.

There was silence.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Are you there?"

"Yes."

She started crying.

"I finally found the right number."

I asked who she was.

She gave me a name.

It was my mother's name.

My mother had died five years earlier.

I immediately thought it was some kind of cruel prank.

Then the woman said something only my mother could have known.

A nickname from my childhood.

A secret phrase we used when I was little.

I couldn't speak.

"Where did you get that?" I asked.

She explained that she had bought an old phone at an auction.

The phone had belonged to her grandmother.

Inside it were dozens of old contacts.

My mother's number was still saved.

She had been trying to identify the people her grandmother had known.

For twelve nights, she had accidentally called me.

But she didn't understand why I sounded so shocked.

I told her my mother had died.

There was silence.

Then she began crying again.

Her grandmother had known my mother decades earlier.

They had worked together.

Before my mother moved away, she had helped her grandmother through a very difficult period.

The woman told me:

"My grandmother never forgot her."

We talked for almost an hour.

Before hanging up, she said something that stayed with me.

"Maybe my grandmother was trying to make sure I found you."

I don't know if that was true.

Maybe it was just a coincidence.

But I never forgot that call.

Sometimes people disappear from our lives.

But the good things they did can keep traveling long after they're gone.

And sometimes, years later, those actions find their way back to us through the most unexpected people.
