The role of inflation in contributing to Nigeria's economic crisis
Inflation refers to the general increase in the prices of goods and services within an economy over time. It erodes purchasing power, raises production costs, depreciates currency, and creates trade imbalances. In Nigeria, inflation has significantly impacted the economy, making it challenging for its citizens. As of 2024, inflation in Nigeria stands at 21.82% annually, driven by soaring prices of food and domestic goods, exacerbating hardships for families. This high inflation rate concerns both the affluent and the less privileged, as the cost of basic commodities becomes unaffordable. The manufacturing sector is particularly vulnerable, facing heightened inflation pressures aggravated by currency depreciation (where 1,619.84 Nigerian Naira equals 1 US dollar). Furthermore, economic instability due to high inflation has triggered crises in sectors such as education. The government has raised fees for education, oil, and gasoline prices to manage national debts (petrol prices surged from N202.48 to N648.93 per liter in March 2023). To mitigate high inflation, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) must adopt coordinated fiscal and monetary policies aimed at ensuring financial stability, maintaining moderate interest rates, and stabilizing exchange rates and inflation rates without adverse effects on the economy. The Nigerian government should enlist qualified economic managers to develop and implement effective policies for sustainable economic growth.
