Mike Singleton’s Ancient Twenty-First Century Folklore is a beautiful book.
The storytelling, woven through poetry and short pieces of prose, beautifully responds to old, reproduced images, most of which were originally shared by the Enchanted Booklet page on Facebook. Clocking in at just under 80 pages, this swift read bridges the gap between traditional mythic cadence and modern emotional reflection.
What makes this collection so special is its therapeutic, comforting quality. Singleton balances a melancholy tone with ultimate resolution, crafting lines so lyrical they practically begged me to turn them into found poetry. The standout sentiment I found myself coming back to several times was, Where Unhappiness Once Was, There Is Now Music And Smiles, a line that perfectly captures the soul of the entire book.
It is a quiet, reflective indie release that lingers in your mind long after the final page. If you love timeless, poetic storytelling that grounds folklore in real human emotion, I highly recommend this.
