Wigs

Some First-Time Buyer Knowledge

Can you tell? (Wig is Fashion)

First, what you need to know is that wigs normally do not come prestyled. Most of the time the length and bangs are kept long so you are able to style the wig yourself. (This can be a blessing or a curse.)

I suggest that you practice cutting hair first unless you went to cosmetology school, or have practiced before. I am self taught and have had good days and bad days from my own learning experiences. I also suggest buying a couple cheaper priced wigs to start with. There are various how-to YouTube tutorials on cutting certain styles. Side swept bangs and easy layers are a couple examples. Though it is a risk it is also a lot of fun and rewarding once you have achieved the style you are going for. You also never feel like you’ve sabotaged yourself.

If you want a pre-styled wig there are still a few options available. Prestyled bangs are hard to come by, but you can still find a decent fringe. I suggest the curly styles. They may need to be combed and washed after each use or they will become matted.

Remember, not all wigs are heatproof. I made this mistake once and the hairs melted. Even if it’s the same brand as another heatproof wig you bought, the next one might not be.

Don’t be afraid to try something inexpensive. I’ve found that my cheapest eBay wig, that was meant for cosplay, was the easiest to style and even though it was pink it didn’t have that fake shiny glow. A lot of inexpensive cosplay wigs come in layers and usually can be styled to have side swept bangs without cutting them. Though cosplay wigs come in many different colors, you can usually find the same cut in a more natural color if that’s what you were looking for. I suggest cosplay if you are going for shorter cuts.

Remember, when cutting bangs on a wig that has a hairline, that you need a lot of product, heat, and time to get it to stick the way you want it to. Don’t be discouraged if it wants to cowlick; sometimes you have to net it back in the bag to flatten it out. Cutting a wig with a hairline has worked with me though, I haven’t tried it on every brand. I'd suggest if you don’t want the hassle of styling a hair-lined wig that you should cut bangs on a wig that already has them. (Remember, a lot of brands come with long bangs so you can style them.)

A lot of realistic-looking wigs are also very thick, so be aware of this. The realistic wig might not be as shiny, and it sometimes comes with baby hairs, but it is also a lot more maintenance and needs to be styled.

Placement of the wig on your hairline can also make all the difference. If it is placed too low it looks fake and you’ll look like you have no forehead. If it is placed too high it looks like you’re balding and the wig could come off. Obviously, it’s all point of view. I’d recommend trying to put it just below where your natural hairline falls.

Be sure to find the right wig that works best with your own head shape. For example, I tried on a wig that was layered and short, but I have a round, small head so it poofs out at my rounded sides. My friend, however, tried on the same wig and her head is more elongated than mine, so it looked perfectly natural on her. A lot of curly wigs will poof out kinda like Hermione Granger’s hair on steroids, especially if you have a round head, so maintenance is needed.

A good idea may be to look up styles specifically for your head shape before buying a wig, or cutting the wig to that desired style may be needed. A hairdresser might even cut the wig for you if you ask.

Well, that’s all for now. Thank you for reading. 😊
