Unblossomed Rose
Makeup Art and Costume Design
Makeup can be a powerful tool...
One has the free will to express themselves, to be bold, to be confident, be unique, and stand out too extraordinary heights. But some tend to forget the true “Power of Makeup”. Take the Unblossomed Rose for example.
With its petals wound tightly and thorns exposed, the Unblossomed Rose does not yet know its hidden secret. Only when it is ready to release all that it has hidden from the world, does it then realize there was a beauty held inside itself all along.
To truly understand and embrace the “Power if Makeup”, YOU must first learn to love yourself... Just as the Unblossomed Rose.

I truly had a blast putting this look together… the makeup, the backstory, and all.
To this day, it is one of my all-time favorite looks, still with the classic “Shanny” touch.
With that, this is a look that is near and dear to me mostly because of what it symbolizes and my own personal life experience and story. It symbolizes the 23-year journey and growth of self-love and acceptance of all that makes me, ME. Now, at the age of 32, I see true beauty from within myself and those around me.
The initial challenge and focus of this makeup was, “The Power of Makeup”. Of course, being me and the unconventional thought process I have, I took “The Power of Makeup” and twined it into an analogy of an Unblossomed Rose. This look became so much symbolic and powerful than makeup, and the initial challenge at hand.
Let’s dive in deeper into the real roots of this look, shall we?
When you think about it, who would buy a dozen unblossomed roses? Most would rather a full dozen of lush, full, beautiful already bloomed roses… de-thorned and presented perfectly in a vase with a nice bow and card attached. The full package right? But we never really stop to think and take in consideration the entire journey a rose goes through to become what we perceive as beautiful.
It begins as a minuscule seedling, starting its journey in darkness. Fighting to extend its limbs through the deeply packed, damp, cool earth. As its roots spread further and become unwavering with the soil, it longs to reach the surface, which seems to be an endless skirmish. But the seedling never stops craving to feel the unknown warmth of the beating light.
Although it may have been perceived as a lifetime and a looming doubt bares its presence…. a breakthrough arises. With a glimmer of elegance, it is the seedlings first breath into the surface and the next stage of its growth and magnificence. But alas, the seedling now a little green bud, faces new challenges and hardships. Again, the thought of hesitation ascends. But, fear not little bud, it is merely just your next journey into becoming the Unblossmed Rose.
As a society, we often fail to look past the surface… we fail to understand someone’s struggles and voyage that makes them what they are today. As a society, WE MUST look past the surface of ourselves. WE MUST remember how strong we are and all that we have overcome and fought for… WE MUST remember our journey in life and all the beauty that it has brought us even though there may have been some dark stretches. Reminisce how it shaped us for the better. That is the true beauty that is within all of us.
Remember, learn to love yourself as you are… when you do, you will have the freedom to extend that beauty to others.
