How to Stay Sun-Safe This Summer

A glorious skin that we long for is not a part of our DNA. A fixed skincare routine is required to achieve that glow. But is the skincare routine enough to protect our skin? No! The harmful ultraviolet rays that we are exposed to in our daily routine is another and the most important reason for skin damage.

The ultraviolet (UV) rays that are emitted by the sun are harmful to human skin. They are responsible for causing skin tanning. Tanning is a natural process that occurs due to over-exposure to UV radiation. The melanin is stimulated by the UV rays, which in turn causes skin darkening.

Excessive exposure to sunlight results in severe skin disorders and even skin cancer at times. What usually one faces due to this overexposure is the sunburn. Sunburns develop redness and skin peeling within 24 hours of the exposure. They can be cured by bathing with cold water and applying some cooling ointments to the affected area. If left uncured or untreated, sunburns can cause blisters that need medical treatment from experts.

So, sun safety should become a part of our daily routine. Sun safety is nothing but taking simple steps to reduce exposure to these UV rays. Our little understanding can help us get a skin free from dark spots, wrinkles, acne, and any pigmentation. It is always advisable to use skincare methods to develop a protective shield around the skin. As we are heading towards the summer, the following bits of advice might help you safeguard your skin from the sun.

1. Pick Clothes That Allow Little Exposure

As summer is here, our cool summer wears and short dresses might be waiting for us in the wardrobe. But I would advise you to let them wait until that sun hides. Try to wear long dresses, full-sleeve tops, and jeans. They cover your entire skin and lessen skin damage from sun rays. You can gear up with hats having wide brims to cover your face from direct exposure to sunlight.

2. Wear Sunglasses to Protect Your Eyes

Your eyes are a sensitive part of your body, and the skin surrounding the eyes is even more sensitive. They get damaged from high-intensity UV lights and may cause cataract in severe cases. The protective shield of sunglasses becomes a need for the day when we step out. You should buy a cool sunglasses that claims to block about 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

3. Say 'Yes' to Sunscreen and 'No' to Sunburn

This is no new thing to be heard of. But do we always apply it before heading out of our home? We must always use sunscreen 20-30 minutes before getting exposed to the sun. This gives time for the sunscreen to get absorbed in our skin and protect it from UV rays. Sunscreen that mentions the term "broad spectrum" must be used as they protect against both UVB and UVA rays. Another point to keep in mind while looking for sunscreen is that the minimum SPF rating is 15. Don't fall for the saying that they will protect your skin for 24 hours. Sunscreen, be it of any brand, need to be applied every 2 to 3 hours. They are never waterproof. The products that make such claims only provide resistance to sunburns when in water for about 80 minutes.

4. Keep Yourself Hydrated

Drinking a gallon of water in a day is one of the best medicines for almost all your problems.Without the proper intake of water, the largest organ of your body i.e. your skin cannotfunction at its best. The visible difference that you will notice in your skin by keeping yourselfhydrated is immense. You will notice fewer wrinkles, improved complexion, and reduced puffiness. The sun in the summers makes you lose large quantities of water that must be balanced by drinking sufficient water. You should also eat fruits and vegetables that contain a good amount of water.

5. Don't Step Out During the Peak Hours

Be it any season; there is a specific part of the day that is considered hotter than the rest of the day. Mostly the time is from 12 PM to 4 PM when the sun is just above us. It is recommended, especially in summers, to avoid going out during these peak hours. You can be at your office space or home at this time. If you are supposedly sitting in a park or a beach, you can find a shady place to sit under like a tree or carry an umbrella.

6. Never Opt for Tanning Methods

When we try to escape the sunlight, we may come up with ideas to use the tanning method to avoid direct exposure to UV rays. It is simply a myth to consider inside tanning as fruitful as compared to direct suntan. Tanning beds, tanning booths, and sun lamps are way more dangerous and cause skin cancer, as they emit more intense UV radiation. We must not give an excuse for getting vitamin D deficient and use these artificial methods.

7. Go for Skin Check-Up at Regular Intervals

Even if you are not prone to any skin sensitivity or have never suffered from direct UV radiation, you must have a skin check-up at regular intervals. Like we go for a medical check-up or dental check-up at regular intervals, going for a skin check-up is also necessary. Nowadays, as our natural environment is degrading, and everything around us is getting more and more artificial, skin problems, or to be precise, skin cancer has become common. The symptom of this doesn't show up easily, so a regular examination helps us keep track of the condition.

8. Consider Experts as Your Last Resort

Many people that we come across in our day to day life find it difficult to move out in the sun. Despite taking all the necessary precautions, they have developed such sensitive skin that can't bear the scorching sun. One should consult a doctor in such cases. Taking over the counter medicines or just applying ointments might not work for some people. They should consult a dermatologist so that the problem doesn't worsen.

As it is rightly said, "Prevention is better than cure," so why go on to the path of cure. Just make these bits of advice a part of your daily routine and prevent you and your family from any skin problem. The more precaution you take while exposing yourself to the UV radiation, the lesser will be your chances of getting skin problems.
