They Said It Was an Accident

But I was there… and I know the truth.

By Abuzar khanPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

The rain started before the sirens.

That’s the first thing I remember.

A slow, steady drizzle turning the road into glass, reflecting streetlights in long, broken lines. The kind of rain that makes everything feel quieter than it should be.

I wasn’t supposed to be there.

But I was.

And I saw everything.

They called it an accident.

That’s what the report said.

That’s what the news said.

That’s what everyone believes.

But accidents don’t look like that.

Accidents don’t feel… planned.

It happened at 11:42 PM.

I know because I checked my phone right after.

I had been walking home, cutting through the long road near the bridge. No cars. No people. Just the rain and the sound of my own footsteps.

Then—

Headlights.

Too fast.

A black car came out of nowhere, speeding down the empty road. It didn’t slow. Didn’t hesitate.

And then—

Impact.

A man stepped into the road.

Or maybe he was already there.

I’m not sure.

But the car hit him hard.

The sound—

I still hear it sometimes.

The car didn’t stop immediately.

It dragged him.

Just for a second.

Then stopped.

Silence.

The rain kept falling.

I froze.

My body refused to move, but my eyes—my eyes saw everything.

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Calm.

Too calm.

He didn’t panic.

Didn’t look around wildly like someone who just caused an accident.

He walked slowly to the body.

Knelt beside it.

And then—

He looked straight at me.

Like he knew I was there the whole time.

My heart stopped.

We were far apart.

Too far for him to see clearly.

But I swear—

He smiled.

Not wide.

Not obvious.

Just enough.

Then he stood up.

Walked back to his car.

And drove away.

No rush.

No fear.

Just… gone.

I didn’t move for a long time.

Eventually, the sirens came.

Police.

Ambulance.

Lights flashing red and blue against the rain.

People asking questions.

“Did you see what happened?”

“Yes,” I said.

My voice didn’t feel like mine.

“It was an accident.”

The word slipped out before I could stop it.

Accident.

That’s what they needed to hear.

That’s what I gave them.

They wrote it down.

Case closed.

But something was wrong.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he looked at me.

Not scared.

Not shocked.

Certain.

Like everything had gone exactly how he expected.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the headlights.

The impact.

The smile.

The next morning—

I saw the news.

“Late Night Accident Claims One Life”

A picture of the victim.

My stomach dropped.

I knew him.

Not personally.

But I had seen him before.

Around town.

Always alone.

Always walking.

Always looking… nervous.

And then I noticed something else.

A detail they didn’t mention.

A small line at the bottom of the article.

“Investigation ongoing.”

But it wasn’t.

I knew it wasn’t.

Because no one else saw what I saw.

No one else noticed what didn’t make sense.

The car didn’t slow down.

The man didn’t react.

And the driver—

He wasn’t surprised.

Days passed.

Then something strange happened.

I started seeing the car again.

At first, I thought it was coincidence.

Black cars aren’t rare.

But this one—

It felt the same.

Same shape.

Same presence.

I saw it parked across the street.

Driving slowly past me.

Waiting at intersections.

Always there.

Always watching.

Then one night—

It stopped.

Right in front of me.

The window rolled down.

And there he was.

The driver.

He looked exactly the same.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Certain.

“You saw it,” he said.

Not a question.

A statement.

I couldn’t speak.

My throat was dry.

“I was waiting,” he continued, “to see what you’d do.”

My heart pounded.

“I told them it was an accident,” I whispered.

He smiled again.

That same small smile.

“I know.”

Silence.

The rain started again.

Soft at first.

Then heavier.

“You did the right thing,” he said.

Something about the way he said it—

Felt wrong.

Like a reward.

Like approval.

And then—

He leaned slightly closer.

“Because it wasn’t meant for him.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He looked at me.

Directly.

Deeply.

“It was meant for you.”

The world stopped.

My breath caught.

“What…?”

“But you weren’t standing there,” he said softly. “He was.”

I stepped back.

“No… no, that’s not—”

“You changed it,” he interrupted. “By being late. By taking a different path. By existing differently for just a moment.”

My mind raced.

Nothing made sense.

“Accidents,” he said, “are just outcomes we don’t understand yet.”

The rain poured harder now.

“And now,” he added quietly, “it’s unfinished.”

I turned to run.

But—

Headlights.

Blinding.

Too close.

Too fast.

And in that final second—

I saw him.

Standing on the side of the road.

Watching.

Smiling.

Like everything had finally gone… right.vv
