There’s a Room in My Mind I’m Not Allowed to Enter
Every time I get close, something inside me begs me to turn back.

I first noticed the door when I was twelve.
It wasn’t a real door.
Not something you could touch or open with your hands.
It was… in my mind.
At the end of a long, quiet hallway that didn’t belong to any place I had ever been.
I don’t remember how I found it.
Only that once I did—
I couldn’t forget it.
The hallway was always the same.
Endless.
Silent.
Dimly lit by a light that didn’t seem to come from anywhere.
And at the very end—
There it was.
A door.
Different from the others.
Because unlike everything else in that strange place…
That door felt alive.
Not in a breathing, moving way.
But in the way something feels when it knows you’re there.
Watching.
Waiting.
I never got too close.
Not at first.
Every time I walked down that hallway, something inside me would tighten.
My chest.
My thoughts.
My breath.
A quiet voice would whisper:
“Not yet.”
And I listened.
For years, I listened.
As I grew older, the hallway changed.
More doors appeared.
Hundreds of them.
Each one holding something.
A memory.
A feeling.
A moment I had lived.
Some doors were easy to open.
Laughter spilled out of them.
Warmth.
Voices I missed.
Others were harder.
They creaked open slowly—
revealing things I didn’t like to remember.
Arguments.
Regret.
Mistakes.
But I could open them.
Face them.
Close them again.
All except one.
The door at the end.
That one never changed.
Never moved.
Never allowed me near.
Sometimes, I would stand halfway down the hallway and just stare at it.
It seemed closer on some days.
Further on others.
But always…
Out of reach.
And that voice—
that same quiet voice—
would return.
“Don’t.”
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just certain.
I tried to ignore it once.
I was seventeen.
Angry at everything.
At everyone.
At myself.
I wanted answers.
So I walked.
Down the hallway.
Past doors that whispered my name.
Past memories that tried to pull me back.
Straight toward it.
The forbidden door.
The air changed the closer I got.
It grew colder.
Heavier.
Like the world itself was pressing against me.
“Stop,” the voice said.
But this time—
I didn’t listen.
I reached out.
My hand trembling.
Heart pounding so loud I could barely think.
My fingers brushed the surface of the door—
And suddenly—
Everything went wrong.
The hallway shattered.
Not physically.
But in feeling.
The walls twisted.
The light flickered.
The doors around me slammed shut—
one after another—
like something was trying to lock me in.
And the voice—
It wasn’t quiet anymore.
“YOU’RE NOT READY.”
I fell back.
Gasping.
Terrified.
And just like that—
I was out.
Back in my room.
Sweating.
Shaking.
Alive.
But different.
After that night…
I stayed away.
I avoided the hallway completely.
Focused on real life.
School.
People.
Distractions.
Anything to keep my mind from wandering back there.
And for a while…
It worked.
Until the dreams started.
Not the hallway.
Something else.
Fragments.
A scream I couldn’t place.
A voice calling my name.
A feeling of falling—
but never hitting the ground.
And always—
always—
that door.
Closer now.
Closer than it had ever been before.
I’m older now.
And I understand something I didn’t back then.
That door…
It’s not just a door.
It’s a boundary.
A line my mind drew to protect me.
From something.
Or someone.
Tonight…
I’m going back.
Not because I want to.
But because I have to.
The hallway is waiting.
Just like I remember.
But different.
Darker.
Quieter.
The doors on the sides are gone.
All of them.
Except one.
At the end.
No voice this time.
No warning.
Just silence.
I walk.
Step by step.
Closer.
Closer.
Until I’m standing in front of it.
The door.
It looks… smaller than I remember.
Weaker.
Like it’s not trying to stop me anymore.
Like it’s tired.
I reach out.
And this time—
Nothing stops me.
The door opens.
And inside—
There’s no room.
No space.
Just… a memory.
I’m small.
Maybe five.
Standing in a room I don’t recognize.
There are voices.
Loud.
Angry.
Not mine.
Someone is crying.
Someone is shouting.
And then—
Silence.
I see myself.
Curled in a corner.
Hands over my ears.
Eyes shut tight.
Trying to disappear.
And suddenly—
I understand.
That door…
Was never meant to keep something out.
It was meant to keep something in.
That moment.
That fear.
That version of me…
That couldn’t handle what was happening.
I step closer.
The child looks up.
At me.
And for the first time—
I see his face clearly.
It’s mine.
And he asks—
“Why did you leave me here?”
My chest tightens.
Because I don’t have an answer.
I didn’t leave him.
I buried him.
Locked him away.
Behind a door I was never meant to open.
But now…
I kneel in front of him.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And I reach out.
“Come with me,” I whisper.
He hesitates.
Just like I always did.
Then…
He takes my hand.
The hallway begins to fade.
The walls soften.
The darkness lifts.
And when I open my eyes—
I’m back.
In my room.
But something is different.
The hallway is gone.
The door is gone.
And for the first time in my life—
There’s no part of me I’m afraid to enter.
Because some doors…
Aren’t locked to keep us out.
They’re locked…
Until we’re strong enough to face what’s inside.
