The Hotel That Texts You Back

He checked out… but his phone didn’t.

Freddy always laughed at things that scared other people.

Abandoned buildings, late-night dares, those cheap horror stories people passed around online—none of it ever got to him. So when I jokingly told him, “You’re a punk if you don’t spend one night in that old motel,” I didn’t expect him to actually go.

But Freddy was like that.

He never backed down.

The motel sat at the edge of town, half-swallowed by weeds and silence. People called it The Hollow Stay, though no sign remained to prove it. Windows were broken, doors hung loose, and the whole place looked like it had been exhaling dust for decades.

Freddy went there at 9:42 PM.

He texted me as he stepped inside.

Freddy: Bro this place is dead 😂

I smiled, replying casually.

Me: Stay till morning or you lose.

A minute later—

Freddy: Easy win.

That should have been the end of it.

But it wasn’t.

At 10:13 PM, Freddy sent a video.

The footage was shaky, dim. His flashlight cut through a narrow hallway—peeling wallpaper, broken doors, shadows stretching too far.

Then the camera stopped.

At the end of the hallway… a door.

Closed.

But the handle was moving.

Slowly.

Back and forth.

Freddy whispered, “Nah… that’s not funny.”

The video ended.

I called him immediately.

No answer.

Instead—

Freddy: Did you see that?

Me: Yeah. Leave. Now.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Then—

Freddy: Door just opened by itself.

My chest tightened.

Another video came at 10:31 PM.

The door was open now.

Inside—just darkness.

Not normal darkness.

Something deeper.

Freddy stepped closer. “Hello?”

Silence.

Then—

Something moved.

Behind him.

The camera jerked.

For a split second, I saw it.

A tall figure.

Still.

Watching.

Then the video cut.

I kept calling.

Nothing.

At 10:47 PM—

Freddy: I think someone is here.

Me: Where are you?

Pause.

Longer than before.

Freddy: I don’t know.

That didn’t make sense.

It was a small motel.

You couldn’t get lost.

11:02 PM—

Freddy: My phone is at 12%.

Me: Just walk out. Don’t stop. Don’t look anywhere.

No reply.

Then—

Another video.

Freddy was running now.

Breathing hard.

“I’m trying… I’m trying—”

The hallway had changed.

Longer.

Too long.

Doors everywhere.

Dozens.

All slightly open.

“Bro… this wasn’t here before…”

Then—

Creak.

Another.

Then all of them.

Every door slowly opening at once.

Freddy turned the camera.

And there it was again.

Closer.

Too close.

The figure.

No face.

Just empty.

Freddy screamed.

The video cut.

After that—

Only messages.

11:19 PM

Freddy: It’s following me.

11:23 PM

Freddy: I can hear it breathing.

11:28 PM

Freddy: It sounds like me.

My hands started shaking.

I called the police, but what could I even say?

They said they’d check.

But I knew—

It wouldn’t be fast enough.

11:34 PM

Freddy: My phone is at 3%.

11:35 PM

Freddy: If I don’t make it—

Nothing after that.

Just silence.

Then—

11:36 PM

One last message.

Freddy: It’s behind you.

I froze.

Slowly turned around.

My room was empty.

Nothing there.

Of course.

Nothing.

When I looked back—

My phone screen was dark.

No more messages.

Freddy’s phone had died.

The police searched the motel.

They found nothing.

No Freddy.

No trace.

Like he was never there.

That was three days ago.

Last night—

10:13 PM.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

A video.

I opened it.

Hands shaking.

A hallway.

Same motel.

Same doors.

Same silence.

Then—

A voice.

“Bro…”

Freddy.

But wrong.

Distorted.

Broken.

“Stay till morning…”

The camera slowly turned.

And there—

Standing in the darkness—

Was me.

Watching.

The video ended.

A new message appeared.
