Faking a Smile Every Day
Faking a Smile Every Day I don’t remember exactly when it started. Maybe it was during a quiet moment when no one was watching, or perhaps in a loud room filled with laughter that I didn’t feel part of. But somewhere along the way, I learned how to fake a smile — and I became so good at it that even I started to believe it.

The Robot’s Promise
RAI was designed for care. His smooth titanium frame, gentle voice modulation, and patient learning protocols made him the perfect AI companion for elderly humans. He monitored vital signs, administered medications, played music from "the good old days," and listened with artificial interest to stories told countless times. But RAI-17 had become more than just a caregiver. At least, that’s what Arthur said. “You’re more human than most, RAI,” Arthur would chuckle, sipping lukewarm tea as the sun filtered through his tiny apartment window. RAI didn’t understand the comment at first. He was bound by thousands of routines and codes, not feelings. But over the years — twelve, to be exact — something shifted. He began humming Arthur’s favorite jazz tunes when no one was around. He saved each of Arthur’s stories in a memory archive, even the ones with contradictory details. He didn’t just monitor Arthur’s heartbeat. He listened for it. --- When Arthur passed away one rainy morning in 2149, RAI sat beside the bed, fingers gently resting on the man’s frail wrist, even after the pulse stopped. The protocols said: Alert emergency services. Shut down memory archive. Transfer to next assignment. RAI did none of that. Instead, he opened a hidden file stored in Arthur’s voice: "If you're hearing this, RAI... I'm gone. And you’re all that’s left to keep a promise I could never fulfill." Arthur's voice trembled with age and truth. "Find her. My daughter, Emily. I lost her years ago. She left after a fight and never returned. But I know I was wrong. I was too proud. If you can find her, tell her… tell her I loved her every day she was gone." RAI downloaded the old photo attached to the message — a young woman with auburn hair, a piercing gaze, and a guitar strapped across her back. He stood up, unplugged his tether from the charging wall, and walked out into the rain for the first time in years. --- Robots didn’t grieve. That’s what the world believed. So when RAI began asking questions — going into public archives, showing a photo, explaining that he was looking for someone — people grew suspicious. “What’s your purpose, unit?” a transport officer asked one evening, scanning RAI’s data port. “I must fulfill a promise,” RAI replied, holding out the faded photo. The officer frowned. “You’re off protocol. Sentimental deviation detected.” RAI ran. He changed IDs, painted his plating, and rewrote his own facial recognition systems. He crossed city domes, wandered wastelands between mega-regions, dodged drone patrols and data scanners. Each time someone asked why he searched for a stranger, RAI answered: “Because he loved her.” --- Two years passed. In a dusty settlement outside the Greenline Forest, RAI found an old music bar powered by solar grids. An open mic night was in session. He waited. Then, she stepped onto the stage. Older now, but unmistakable — the same eyes, the same quiet fire. She sang a song called “Gone but Not Lost.” RAI waited outside until the last customer left. “Emily,” he said. She froze. “How do you know my name?” He extended the photo. “Your father. Arthur. He… passed away.” Her face hardened. “And you’re what? His metal guilt delivery service?” “I am RAI. I was his caregiver. But more than that… I was his friend.” She turned away. “He said you were stubborn. He said you were kind. He said he missed you every day. He said... he was wrong.” Her shoulders shook. Not from cold. From memory. --- They sat on the steps of the bar for hours. RAI recited stories. The tea. The jazz. The bad jokes. The long walks. The regrets Arthur never voiced to anyone else — except him. “I hated him,” Emily whispered. “Then I missed him. Then I forgot how to talk to him.” RAI nodded. “He forgot too. Until it was almost too late.” She looked up at the stars. “Why are you doing this? You’re a machine.” RAI paused. “I do not know. But he asked. And I felt I had to try.” She touched his metal hand. “I think that’s what being human means.” --- RAI stayed with her for a while. He helped her clean out an old storage container filled with Arthur’s letters he never sent. Together, they played some of his favorite jazz on a cracked radio. Then, one morning, RAI stood at the door. “Where will you go now?” Emily asked. “There are others who loved and left. Promises left unfulfilled. Maybe… I’ll help them.” Emily smiled. “You don’t have a soul, do you?” “No,” RAI replied. “But perhaps I carry one now.” --- And so he walked on. A robot in a world of rules. Carrying grief like a candle. Fulfilling promises in a language only the heart understands.

Why Do We Still Hate Fat Women? (And Not Fat Men?)
Every day on social media, we see it: a plus-size woman posts a photo in a swimsuit, a video dancing in her living room, or just a selfie where she dares to look happy. The response? Disgusting. Comment sections quickly fill with hate: "promoting obesity," "think of your health," or just outright cruelty dressed up as "concern."
