”I wish I could do this at home.” Every one of you ever after a good blowdry, right?

Sleek straight to make everyone jealous IS possible to achieve at home and it might just be in few tricks that you’re missing or a new routine that is easier that what you’re doing now.

The first step to make the whole process 100 times easier is to start with clean well moisturised hair. Consider it as skincare before makeup. And rough dry the hair to 80% dry, no brushes just fingers so we don’t erupt the hair and make it frizzy. This way we make the blowdry quick and the water won’t dilute your products. Perfect!

And voila fresh lovely base for your hair dreams to come true.

The biggest misunderstanding in achieving straight sleek hair is that it needs a lot of heat and tension especially when working with very curly or coarse hair and perhaps yes to a degree but there’s definitely easier ways and most importantly gentler ways to get that shine and lasting smoothness.

So when it comes to choosing products for getting that sleek hair think light hold and moisture. Oils in the ends, blow dry creams and light lotion sprays. This way you get the gorgeous quality but soft and moving finish to make it look professional.

Starting with the most moisturising products from mid lengths to ends and any sprays with light hold throughly through roosts and mid lengths. You can always layer more hold if needed but moisture here is the key.

Then sectioning. I know it sounds time consuming but trust me it does make a difference and the whole thing quicker. So if you want rather sleek and graphic then start with finding your parting and section your hair to a back section and one section on each side of your head. If you’re looking to have some volume then section the top of your hair without your parting and continue to section sides and back as previous.

Now a thing you might of not thought but your brush has a huge impact on the finish.

NATURAL BRISTLE

This is the one if your hair is coarse or super curly or you want the smoothest silkiest result.

The natural bristles help you get the most tension for your blowdry as the bristles tend to be very densely packed hence making the hair smooth in no time but make sure your hair is tangle free before using these brushes with a wide tooth comb.

CERAMIC ROUND BRUSH

This one is probably the most common round brush that if not you, your mom does own. But not because it is old school but it is the go to when thinking of blowdry.

The ceramic part is what creates the magic as it heats up as you run hot hair from your hairdryer creating similar effect what the plates of straightener does. You can heat your brush before you start to get the most even result for each part of your hair but it is made to do it anyway whilst you blowdry your hair.

And as it uses heat to perform and smoothen this is best tool if you’re looking to get volume and even smooth the dryest ends. Also this suits for all hair types.

PADDLE BRUSH

Often enough I see people using paddle brush to blow dry their hair and hey nothing wrong as it gives you the most natural result but unfortunately only works on straightish and very softly wavy hair.

Since the bristles are very sparse on paddle brushes the air from the hairdryer gets to really flow through which dries the hair quicker but this brush can’t get your hair a lot of tension hence creates very natural result. On wavy, curly hair it mostly just stretches the curl and can be a look but not the choice when seeking that sleek smooth hair.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

•There’s one trick if anything you should take away from this ramble is that what every hairdresser gets taught: “Get the root first and rest will follow.” Try it and thank me later.

•This one is for afro and curly hair and those edges. The best trick is to have moisture in the hair however I’d suggest for the hairline to use extra as water or as a product to get the hair to its softest form and in thin sections blowdrying the front. And as you start with your heat and tension let the airflow ado the most work and the less time you put heat the better but once you’ve achieved the smoothness take the heat down on your hairdryer and blast the sections with cold air to lock that smoothness you just created last longer.

•And lastly my smooth hair people, let that hair to cool down before you go out or you tuck that hair behind your ear whatever you do as the hair can still take that shape or even lose it (unless that’s what you want).

Enjoy your smooth hair and collect the compliments you deserve.
