Like your skin, your hair can get damaged during the winter. Though most of the cells of the hair strands are dead, the cold and dry atmosphere around the hair can cause great damage to the shaft and roots. It is important to understand the problem caused by the cold weather, it is the key to fixing the damage before it starts. If you don't fix the problem before it's too late you may be dealing with a big problem like dry hair to falling and breaking ends. Either way, Winter can cause lots of problems to the hair and skin, and the best way to fix them is to understand the problems and to deal with them promptly.

How does the cold and dry air of winter damage your hair?

During winter the biggest threat to the hair is cold and dry air. In a cold environment, there is significant dehydration. During the cold months, the body has a natural tendency to preserve body heat by any means necessary. Which means limiting blood flow to the skin and extremities. Don't worry blood still flows around the body but not like it would when it is hot outside. At the end of the day, the skin of the scalp is receiving less blood than it was before.

More so, the dry air around the hair leads to severe dehydration of the hair strands. Which is like piling trouble on top of trouble. Ultimately, your hair loses much-needed moisture. Less moisture is bad for the hair.

The extent of the damage to your hair due to cold and dry air?

Damaged hair is the worst thing ever. knowing the type of damage, however, is the best step toward fixing the problem. The cold and dry hair damage from winter is not like the dry hair from lack of nutrients. During the winter moisture is directed extracted from the hair strands, leaving the hair dry and brittle. Moreover, decreased blood flow to the follicles of the scalp contributes to further dryness by limiting water delivery there.

2 noticeable damage to the hair during winter are:

1. Dry hair

After moisture is extracted from the strands the hair is dry and fragile. Fragile hair also means breaking hair. Hair experts explain moist strands are smoother and stronger. The strands also look shinier and healthier a thicker and therefore are less likely to break.

2. Falling hair

Falling hair during winter is very common. Dry hair is already fragile and coupled with decreased blood flow to the follicles, hairs strands a few things happen that contribute to falling hair strands. These includes:

  1. The strands are thinner than normal.
  2. Hair growth is stunted due to decreased nutrients.

How can you fix the problem? It is easier than you think?

Now that you understand the problems that can arise during winter it is time to fix these problems maybe before it starts. Now I under-told you why I started writing this article, but it was because my first winter hit me pretty hard. I had no time to prepare for what is to come and how to deal with it. But after a few hours of research, I uncovered the problem and the solution.

There are 2 things causing winter hair damage, i.e., cold and dry air almost 24/7 and decrease blood circulation to the scalp. So to fix this problem you will reverse the effects of winter. Therefore:

1. Add moisture back the hair

There are many ways to add moisture back to the hair during winter, or at any time. It starts with the products that you use on your hair. shampoos can strip away much-needed moisture from the hair, so it is important to use mild shampoos which will add moisture to the hair and not take it away.

Conditioners and hair creams are also great for the hair. However, using them correctly is even more important. While you want moisture, it should be wrapped saturated in the hair strands. This means products with nutrients and moisturizing oils are the best and safest bet.

I currently use the Mizani line of hair products and they work great. If you already use a moisturizing line of hair products for dry or falling hair then continue using it.

2. Get at least 1-hour exercise daily

Winter might be the most difficult time of the year to exercise. Exercise improves circulation by directly fixing 1 of the major problems. And it doesn't take a lot nor would you have to leave the house.

Since it's my first winter, I am not willingly going out into the cold. So I use the stairs in my house, the dumbbells, and resistance bands with a few days of coaching from a few YouTube videos. This is a great way to fix a lot of problems too, like the few extra pounds after Thanksgiving and aging problems.

So it's time to get in shape and cure the dry hair problem. A few pieces of advice:

  1. Use the stairs for your cardio workout.
  2. Get good videos for abs workouts and upper body strength.
  3. Then use the resistant bands to work on your legs and glutes.

Over the last 4 days, I have been doing this exact routine for only 1 hour daily. My hair looks better, it stopped falling as much and I feel as healthy as I did when I was frequent at the gym during the summer.

You should try it for yourself, I garantee results!!

4 Oils you can use to keep your hair shiny and healthy during and after winter.

By now you might be wondering what oils you can use to help your hair look and stay shiny and healthy during the winter. In fact, I wrote an article about the 4 Perfect oils for healthy hair. 4 most recognized hair oils for healthy hair during the winter are:

  1. Coconut oil
  2. Olive oil
  3. Castor oil
  4. Argon Oil

These oils have 1 thing in common they all have fatty acid which contributes to moisturizing the hair and keeping the hair strands healthy.

Let's recap what was said earlier

Now that you know the problem that occurs during winter leading to damaged hair and the solution to these problems. It is time for you to start using these solutions to fix these problems.

During winter the problem is dry hair and falling hair. It is due to the cold and dry air hair strands are subject to during winter. Heated air doesn't make things better since it is just hot and dry air, which does the same as the winter air. The solution is to use moisturizing products from the shampoos to the har oils. A little bonus is exercises that improve circulation especially in places like the scalp.

Now it's time for you to stop reading and start working on the problem. But before you go join Vocal now so you can contribute to Vocal as well.
