If you don't know your skin type:

First and foremost, let's talk about cystic acne.

Cystic acne happens when an infection caused by a pimple settles deep into your skin. It creates painful and red tender bumps full of pus and let's just be honest, it's hard to cover. Even with a generous amount of concealer, it's not something any of us want to have on our faces.

After I turned 25, I started noticing cystic acne forming around my jawline area and my chin. I was desperate to find a solution for this issue that didn't involve any topical medications, since my skin is super sensitive and prone to redness, flaking and irritation. After using this scrub for three months, I'm elated not only because it helped with the cysts, but it also exfoliates and reduces the amount of dry patches on my skin. For those of us who wear makeup regularly, dry patches are difficult to work around if you're planning on putting on a full face of makeup. You can imagine the frustrations I've had to go through trying to find the right products for my problematic skin texture.

Now, while the maximum strength formula can make your skin feel stripped of its natural oils and may leave it feeling super dry after a couple of uses, a good moisturizer and a consistent skincare routine for your skin type will help combat this issue.

Like some people, I have combination skin. My t-zone (forehead, nose and chin) all suffer from excessive oil and the rest of my face is pretty dry. With that being said, it's safe to say I have a hard time trying to find products that combat both issues and help me fight off the sporadic acne that tends to plague me throughout the year. When I found the Acne Proofing Daily Scrub from Neutrogena, I was hesitant in trying it out because of its gritty texture. Given that the directions on the back of the tube do say that it is safe to use twice a day, I decided to set aside my reservations and decided to give it a shot. Man, I was so glad I did!

How I Used This Product:

  1. I always clean my hands before I wash my face. Any build up of bacteria, dirt, or oils that settle into your fingertips will cause more acne to form on your skin. (Also, try to not to touch your face throughout the day.)
  2. I rub cold water on my face first. Now, I know you're supposed to start off with warm water to open up your pores, but for my sensitive skin, it just doesn't work for me. The cold water helps with the inflammation that will happen when you use any type of scrub on your face.
  3. I took a dime's worth of product onto my fingertips, and dipped it under the cold water before I began to rub it on my face.
  4. I only scrub the product onto my t-zone and where I get cystic acne the most.
  5. After rinsing out the product with cold water, I make sure to blot the excess water off my face with a soft towel. (Swiping motions used with the rough texture of a towel can cause the redness and irritation to grow worse.)
  6. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! (Make sure to find the right moisturizer for your skin type. See the photo at the beginning of this review to see what your skin type is.)

All in all, I recommend using this method and this product if and only if you have trouble with other topical medications that are used to treat cystic acne. I also recommend to drink a lot of water while using this product, or any other products that tend to dry out your skin. While water takes its time to heal all the damage we do to our skin with makeup wipes etc, it'll help with hydrating your skin naturally, obtaining a subtle natural glow and help fight those infections that lead to cystic acne.
