May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

With millions of cases diagnosed just in the United States each year; it’s time for you to learn everything you need to know about this deadly cancer.

In the first place, it is important to have a skin exam. Because I was diagnosed with Melanoma Skin Cancer many years ago; I recently had my skin check-up with my Dermatologist. And, I’m happy to share with you that I will now see my Dermatologist yearly. Now, no more need for me to go several times a year. Phew! You betcha!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Know the Basics

Though Melanoma is known as the most common type of skin cancer; there are others to be aware of. In fact, one of the most common is Basal Cell Carcinoma a.k.a. BCC.

Since approximately 3.6 million cases are reported each year in the United States alone; these typically begin as:

  • Bumps known to be shiny
  • Red patches
  • Scars
  • Open sores

Usually, these are uncontrollable growths that appear as the likes of above. However, the good news is these rarely grow if you spot it right away.

Another type of skin cancer is known as Square Cell Carcinoma a.k.a. SCC. Because this is much more dangerous than BCC; it is essential that you have treatment right away Hence, this usually starts out on the upper levels of the epidermis.

In addition, they manifest as open sores, red patches and warts. Also, they may bleed and appear crusty.

Know the ABCDEs of Melanoma

Because melanoma is the most common type of skin cancer; it is without a doubt, the most dangerous. However, if melanoma is caught early enough; you have a good chance of surviving.

Also, the majority of melanoma are brown spots; but can also be blue, pink, purple, red or white.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness – Reduce your Risk

Meanwhile, the most important way to prevent skin cancer is to use a sunscreen every day. So, before leaving your house; put this on your face and any exposed body part.

Even on a cloudy day; you should still use sunscreen.

Moreover, you can lower your risk of developing any type of skin cancer by using a minimum of an SPF 30+ several times a day. And, for more protection or if your skin burns easily; use a higher level SPF.

Supergoop Glow Screen

From Supergoop, this broad spectrum sunscreen has an SPF 40.

In addition, this glow screen adds an instant glow with powerful ingredients to protect your skin.

In my opinion, this sunscreen is perfect to wear under your makeup or as a substitution for anyone who wears foundation or a tinted moisturizer.

The key is to apply this generously over your face or neck and reapply throughout the day.

Whether you have normal or sensitive skin; this sunscreen will leave your skin looking and feeling hydrated and smooth.

In addition, this sunscreen is:

  • Fragrance Free
  • Octinoxate Free

BLUE LIZARD Sunscreen SPF 50

If you have sensitive skin; look no further.

At an affordable price; this broad spectrum mineral sunscreen has no chemicals and will keep your skin protected from the harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Also, this lotion is sweat and water resistant. However you should still reapply this to be safe at least every 2 hours.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

In essence, buying a sunscreen can be overwhelming with all of the different brands available. However, the most important things to look for is to make sure the product has an SPF of a 30 or higher.
