It is now possible to listen to your favorite music or the voice of a special someone coming out from your augmented reality (AR) Soundwave tattoo for up to a minute. All you need is a smartphone, Skin Motion app, and body art done by Las Vegas tattoo artists licensed by Skin Motion.

How Does the Soundwave Tattoo AR Application Work?

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could hear a sound coming from your body art? The sound wave inked on your body can make it possible to listen to just about any sound like the voice of a special person, your favorite song, or birds chirping. You transform that audio clip into a visual soundwave. Then, a tattoo artist transfers the soundwave into permanent ink on your skin. Then, whenever you want to hear the clip, you "scan" your arm using a smartphone, app and it translates the soundwave into the audio. Here’s how:

Make your soundwave

Record the sound of your choice. Upload the audio clip to generate your soundwave stencil to the Skin Motion website. Use a computer to upload files, mobile uploading will be coming soon.

Get it tattooed

Take the Soundwave template to a certified Skin Motion tattoo artist. Sign up to find one near you with this Tattoo Artist Directory.

Purchase and activate

Upload a photo of your tattoo and get it activated for $39.99 the first year and $9.99 each year, then on to keep it activated.

Do Soundwave Tattoos Bridge the Physical and Digital Worlds in Real-time?

Yes, once the AR tattoo is inked, it can be scanned and played back to recreate the sound as it was recorded. Skin Motion blends analog and digital technologies in creating the sound. The sound wave inked on the skin symbolizes the analog signal. Then it is scanned using the smartphone and converted to a digital signal by an app, and turned into a sound wave for playback. A collector can enjoy sound in visual form anytime and anywhere.

Can Soundwave Tattoos be Considered as an Entirely New Type of Media?

Soundwave tattoos are an entirely new type of media bridging the physical and digital worlds in real-time.

It was Nate Siggard’s, Skin Motion CEO, idea behind the AR tattoos. One day his girlfriend asked him this question, “What if you could transform your favorite tune or even voice into a part of your body?” Realizing it was possible, Siggard created a Soundwave tattoo for himself. That was the recording of Juliana and their 4-month-old baby saying, “I love you.”

In Which Tattoo Shops Can People Have This Kind of Tattoos?

Not all tattoo shops can create Soundwave body ink. A tattoo artist needs to be trained and certified by Skin Motion before they can ink a Soundwave tattoo. You can use the Tattoo Artist Directory to find certified Skin Motion tattoo artists near you.

Patent Pending-technology Creates Personalized Augmented Reality Tattoos

The first Soundwave tattoo was created in April 2017 by Nate Siggard. Nate tattooed one on himself and played it back using a mobile app. A video was created and posted online to show how it worked. It went viral on Facebook with over 350 million views.

The home base of Skin Motion is in Los Angeles, California, and has licensed tattoo artists in over 40 countries to make Soundwave tattoos available to the masses.

Can a Tattoo Be Customized?

As long as the Soundwave tattoo created by Skin Motion artist is visible, you can add designs inside or around it. The Soundwave stencil must be detectable in order to playback properly.

You can fill the Soundwave shape with a color of the design, leave the inside of the pattern empty so that it will reflect only the outline, or you can place a design outside the outline.
