Function of Beauty | An Honest Review

Is it worth it?

I finally caved and bought the flashy brand Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube has been hyping forever! I perused the site a while back but my phone has not stopped haunting me with ads ever since, so here we are. Before we dive in, I want to note this post is not sponsored. Function of Beauty also has a line of Body Care and Skin Care products that are not included in this review—this covers my experience with Hair Care only.

Function of Beauty | What is It?

Function of Beauty lets you create shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments based on hair type, style goals, and even color and fragrance preferences. They currently offer:

  • Shampoo + Conditioner
  • Purple Shampoo
  • Leave-in Treatment
  • Hair Mask
  • Hair Serum
  • Hair Mist
  • The first step is taking their super easy quiz to figure out your hair profile, then choose up to five hair goals you want, and finally pick your fragrance! You can pick the strength of your fragrance (or even opt for fragrance free), and choose from a lot of fun colours to mix and match your shampoo and conditioner.

    Build Your Hair Profile

    Choose Your Hair Goals

I really liked the easy-to-use interface, especially the goals which gives you information about each one as you clicked on it and told you what ingredients would target those problem areas.

    My Personalization:

    GOALS

    1. Strengthen
    2. Anti-frizz
    3. Nourish roots
    4. Anti-aging
    5. Hydrate

    HAIR PROFILE

    straight + medium + dry

    FRAGRANCE

    nude (p)each, medium

(It literally smells like the candy fuzzy peaches. It’s wonderful!)

Hair Goals | Take The Time To Consider Each One

Choosing only 5 goals was overwhelming. If you aren’t exactly sure what kind of goals you’re looking for, they have a great article “How to Determine Your Ultimate #Hairgoals” to help you out! It breaks the 18 options into 4 categories

    1. The Boosters - Hair goals designed to help give you an added boost of everything from shine to volume.
    2. The Fixers - Hair damaged? Scalp irritated? Bring your naturally beautiful hair back to life with these revitalizing hair goals.
    3. The Multitaskers - For hair goals that truly do a little bit of everything, look no further.
    4. The Protectors - Help safeguard your strands from future damage and annoying hair concerns with these preventative-focused hair goals.

Anti-aging might be a funny one to consider to someone in their 20s or 30s, but that’s one of the times I really found their blog post about hair goals helpful. Anti-aging “Revitalizes + strengthens your hair to prevent premature aging caused by environmental stressors, heat/chemical styling, and nutrient loss.” As someone with anemia, I have an iron deficiency and have dry hair all the time and my anti-aging selection was to hopefully help with that.

Function of Beauty | Is It Worth It?

I've been using Function of Beauty for one month now, and I like it! Am I obsessed-head-over-heels in love with it? I wouldn’t go that far, but I am enjoying it so far. I can definitely feel a difference! My hair is noticeably softer and less frizzy, and it also feels healthier. I do feel like the formula I picked works really well with my hair, and I find the shampoo and conditioner are gentle, lightweight, and easy to manage.

    The Biggest Con?

    The cost.

The price is already on the steep side and as a Canadian paying exchange on top of it, it was a pretty penny (but bonus points for free shipping!). The 16oz shampoo and conditioner set is $49.99 USD, but they did just introduce a "Starter Set" where you get your first 8oz shampoo and conditioner set for $29.99 USD instead of the regular $39.99 USD.

    Highlighted Concern: Hair Loss?

Before purchasing, I spent a few long night scouring the internet for reviews, and a common concern kept cropping up about people experiencing hair loss with Function of Beauty. I personally have not had any issues regarding hair loss and have only had positive hair results as of now. I've been using Function of Beauty for one month, washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner every other day.

    Final Verdict

Personally, I’ll probably keep using personalized hair care, but I’m willing to try out some of the other brands out there. The reviews on Function of Beauty I've come across are extremely diverse and if it’s something you’re interested in I suggest looking for reviews with similar hair types and trying it out at least once to see if it works for you. You can take the time to try it yourself before committing to a subscription or more products! They do have a refund option within 30 days of delivery of your first order. (Check out their refund policy here.)

Function of Beauty | Discounts and Coupon Codes.

Don’t pay full price! There are always 20% promo codes out there so do a quick search before you checkout! (I personally haven’t seen one better than 20% out there but it never hurts to look!).

(TL;DR - Yes it's worth it, but make sure you optimize your hair goals and do research on your hair type.)
