Now and then, when one has to perform the difficult task of shaving, one craves a more perpetual solution. Notwithstanding the point that laser hair removal is undoubtedly the most lasting option, people do not dare try it out mainly for these three reasons:

1- A little concerned about the pain.

2- As it's surely the most costly available option.

3- And last but not least how long does laser hair removal last?

Because, if they are going to invest the time and money, they want the hair to be gone forever.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Technique Work:

In laser hair removal, waves of light are used to destroy the hair cascading to the origin, by targeting and eradicating the pigment in the hair follicle. These laser-light pulsations generate heat which burns the hair follicle until it is lastingly destroyed. The targeted hair follicle is exposed to a high-energy beam of light. It is carefully considered that the enclosing skin structures are not hurt.

Since the Mid 90s, laser hair removal is in vogue, and with time, both techniques and devices have developed a lot. And now the whole process is quite safe conditioned it is done by well skilled and qualified laser physicians. As there are different types and techniques of this process so while making a decision on which laser is to be used on a patient following few factors are considered carefully.

Skin Tone, Haire Color, Tattoos If Any, Hair Coarseness, Past Use Of Certain Medicines

Some Precautions:

One must not be pregnant to get the procedure done.

One must be off of antibiotics (both topical and oral), for at least 10-15 days before starting laser. It is because one gets extra sensitive to light and can be burned.

Likewise, retinoids should not be used for 3-5 days before the treatment.

It should also be considered that if a female is about a week away from starting of periods the appointment must be rescheduled as the skin can be extra sensitive and chances of pain are increased.

Advances in laser technology have also made laser hair removal much more reliable for darker skin tones as initial techniques like IPL Lasers were not able to treat darker skin tones.

Now there is the Nd: YAG Q-switched laser available that operates at a longer wavelength (1064 nm) so it can remove hair safely even in darker skin tones. Alexandrite lasers, by contrast, have shorter wavelengths (820 nm) and are usually used to treat lighter skin types.

Now we come to the main question i.e. how long does laser hair removal last?

Although laser hair removal is permanent yet there are chances that the hair can still be going to grow back ultimately. But now this hair will be finer and less coarse than before, and now the number of active hair and density will also be reduced in the area where treatment was applied.

The reemergence of hair also depends on the area where the process has been done as there are more chances of reemergence in the areas of coarse hair like lower legs bikini area and underarms. Few other factors are the energy level used, the expertise of the laser physician, and underlying tones of the skin.

The point to be noted is, it is not a one-and-done sort of deal. When all the sessions are concluded, laser hair removal will last for at least two years. Then maintenance sessions are required to keep the area without hair forever. It is also to be noted that laser hair removal is a bit costly.

It depends on what part of the body is to be treated. It may cost from $200 to $2000 per session. And considering that it is a specialized field, so for the protection of skin only a well-versed dermatologist or licensed technician’s services must be availed.
