He Wouldn’t Share the Weights. He Lost More Than a Workout.
A Gym Story About Cowardice, Courage, and the Woman Who Walked Away

At 7:40 p.m., the gym was loud. Treadmills in a row. People on them watched screens. Nobody looked at the person next to them. Magnesium chalk dusted the floor in the free-weight area. Plates clanged together, a dull sound like someone knocking on a wall underground.
Chen Mo stood in front of the dumbbell rack. He wanted a pair of 30s. His right hand closed around the handle. A voice behind him said, “No bro, we’re still using them.”
He turned. Two men. One in a grey tank top, one wearing a pinky ring. At their feet, dumbbells from 25 to 90 lay in a low iron row. Grey Tank held a 40. Pinky Ring sat on a bench, phone glowing, other hand empty.
Chen Mo pulled his hand back. “I just need one set.”
“We’re still using them,” Grey Tank said. He sounded like he had said it many times.
Chen Mo walked away. He trained legs. Smith machine, leg press, seated kicks. Between sets, he drank water, checked his phone, wiped sweat. It was leg day. He did not need dumbbells. Then he lay on the leg press for four minutes without moving.
Lin Zhao appeared three days later.
She walked to the rack and picked up a pair of 35s. Grey Tank opened his mouth. She had already turned. “I’ll put them back when I’m done.” She did not look at his face. She did not wait for an answer. She set the dumbbells on the floor beside the squat rack and started Bulgarian split squats. Grey Tank closed his mouth. He moved his phone from his left hand to his right.
Chen Mo was on the cable machine doing face pulls. He saw her ankles, thin and steady. The plates sat solid in her hands. She finished a set, set the dumbbells down, and glanced at the pile near the two men. Then she went back to her set.
He did not speak to her.
The second time was outside the locker room. Chen Mo’s towel fell. He bent to pick it up. Lin Zhao came out of the women’s locker room and nearly stepped on his hand. She stopped. “Are your fingers okay?”
“Fine.”
“You tried to take the 30s last time.”
Chen Mo paused. “How do you know?”
“I heard.” She nudged the towel toward his hand with her foot. “They do this every day. The longer you wait, the more they think it’s theirs.”
Chen Mo stood up and put the towel over his shoulder. He opened his mouth. Lin Zhao was already gone. Her ponytail swung once in the doorway and disappeared.
On the subway home, Chen Mo kept remembering the way she had kicked the towel. Her shoe tip was clean. She had aimed well.
After that, they began training at the same time. No arrangement. Chen Mo arrived at 6:30. Lin Zhao arrived at 6:40. He trained chest. She trained chest. He trained back. She trained back. They did not share machines. When one was doing a set, the other stood nearby and watched.
One Tuesday, Chen Mo was bench pressing. The bar stuck on his chest. His first set. He could not move it. He kept his mouth shut. The gym was loud. No one would hear. Lin Zhao walked over, gripped the bar with both hands, and helped him rack it.
“Why didn’t you call me?” she asked.
“I thought I could get it.”
“You couldn’t.”
Chen Mo sat up, breathing hard. His face was red. “Thank you.”
Lin Zhao did not answer. She went back to her dumbbells and kept doing lateral raises. Her arms stopped in the air, steady. Chen Mo watched her back. He forgot to start his next set.
On a rainy day, few people were there. Lin Zhao trained shoulders. Chen Mo sat on a bench nearby doing bicep curls. She finished a set, put the dumbbells down, and reached for her water bottle. It was on the other end of the bench. She could not reach it. Chen Mo picked it up and handed it to her. His fingers touched hers. Neither let go right away.
“Your hands are cold,” Lin Zhao said.
“Just washed them.”
“Mm.”
She drank, then set the bottle by her foot. Chen Mo sat back and kept curling. On the eighth rep, his form broke. He put the dumbbell down. Lin Zhao said, “Are you coming tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“Then tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow.”
On the way home, Chen Mo kept hearing “Then tomorrow.” He typed a line into his phone notes, then deleted it.
Then came the seventh week.
A new coach made the two men put the dumbbells back once. They behaved for two days. On the third day, Grey Tank smelled of alcohol. He saw Lin Zhao take a pair of 40s and walked over. “Who the fuck do you think you are, taking our shit every day?”
Lin Zhao set the dumbbells down. “They belong to the gym.”
“I had them first.”
“You have what’s in your hands. This is what’s in mine.”
Grey Tank took a step forward. Chen Mo stood three meters away. His heart beat fast. His palms were wet. He took one step. Then stopped. He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
Lin Zhao looked at him. Once. Then she picked the dumbbells back up and walked away. She did not say a word.
Chen Mo followed her to the door. “I didn’t want trouble.”
Lin Zhao stopped. She did not turn around. “I know.”
“I’m not that kind of person.”
“What are you?” She turned then. Her eyes were dry. Her voice was flat. “You won’t even make trouble. How would you dare like me?”
Chen Mo said nothing. Lin Zhao left. Her back grew smaller in the glass door. A bus blocked her from view.
For a week after, Lin Zhao did not come.
The gym stayed the same. Treadmills in a row. Plates clanging. Grey Tank and Pinky Ring still piled dumbbells at their feet. Chen Mo still arrived at 6:30. But he no longer walked around them. He went to the rack and picked up a pair of 30s. Grey Tank said, “We’re still using them.”
Chen Mo said, “I wasn’t asking.”
He carried the dumbbells to a bench and did four sets. He put them back on the rack, each one lined up with its slot. On his way out, he saw the pile still at their feet. He stopped. He picked up the outermost 25 and put it back on the rack. Then another. He put them back one by one, like clearing plates from a table after someone else had finished eating. Grey Tank watched. Pinky Ring watched. Neither spoke.
He racked the last dumbbell. The rack looked fuller. He picked up his bag and left.
On the eighth week, Chen Mo went to the coffee shop Lin Zhao had mentioned. She was behind the counter, drying cups. He walked in and set a 5-pound dumbbell on the counter. She had said once that she did not have that weight at home, that she needed it for rehab.
Lin Zhao looked at the dumbbell. “You took it from the gym?”
“I bought it. It’s new.”
“Why?”
Chen Mo said, “You said you wanted one. From now on, I’ll ask first if you want me to speak.”
Lin Zhao set the cup down. She picked up the dumbbell and turned it in her hand. “What time tomorrow?”
“Six.”
“Don’t be late.”
“I won’t.”
Chen Mo put his hands in his pockets and walked toward the door. At the doorway, Lin Zhao called, “Chen Mo.”
He turned.
“Close the door. There’s a draft.”
He closed the door. Through the glass, he saw Lin Zhao place the 5-pound dumbbell beside the register, next to the tip jar and a pot of pothos. The dumbbell was small. Iron grey. It sat next to the tip jar.
He pushed the door open. The wind hit his face. He walked to the subway. Tomorrow at six, he would train back. He would stand at the dumbbell rack. If the two men were there, he would say, “Move. I’m taking a pair.” Then he would carry the dumbbells to the bench, do four sets, and put them back. He would keep his eyes on the rack.
