Let me be myself

Beautiful, a word that create butterflies in your stomach and that even makes you blush. But have you ever wondered what exactly is beautiful and what does it exactly mean. Beautiful, a word which we all want to hear and which we all want to be. But what exactly makes us beautiful.

Glass skin, white shining hands, spotless face, fleshless stomach and skinny bones. Even a small pimple can give us heart attack or can even bring us down to ugly from the high standard of beauty. This makes me think that has the concept of this word 'beautiful' been this shallow always or is it just the beauty product companies that has hijacked our concept of beauty.

In our childhood, we often heard that beauty is in the eyes of beholder or beauty lies inside the heart so how come this moved to nearly impossible standards. In recent times, there has been a quick shift in the perception of beauty, but have you ever wondered who has facilitated this shift and who has benefited from it. Certainly we did not.

Waking up and turning to mirror to see your beautiful face and then almost crying seeing the dark circle around your eyes, while ignoring the big round eyes, the pretty small and sharp nose, the rose pink checks; is this exactly what beauty means? Being ungrateful for what we have and yearning for what we are not.

Do you know what makes us human? Our imperfections. Yes, you read it right, it's our imperfections that make us human and that's what we are. These pimples show us that we are human, this tainted skin is the mark of our efforts, these dark circles shows that there is some spark in your heart that stops you from sleep, this is exactly what we are. I am not questioning the choice to cherish yourself the way you want, I am questioning the pressure we have created as a society to be beautiful, to be something that we are not.

Why is it shameful to be yourself, why is it odd to be human, why is it odd to have a different definition of beautiful? We all know that humans grow hair on their skin, so why it is shameful to show someone your hairy arms? Why do we have to clarify that we had commitments and we couldn't change ourselves to someone we are not? This is the question we need to find the answer as a society to make it more breathable for those who want to be what they actually are, who want to cherish their real being and who want to prioritize their dreams over the expectations of society.

I believe everyone is born pretty, everyone is beautiful in their own ways. But for me the most charming thing in this world is to be yourself. You are beautiful when you believe in yourself, when you cherish yourself the way you are, when don't yearn to be someone you are not and when you accept yourself the way you are. The society will not accept you unless you accept your very own self. Accepting the way you are and living the way you want will make you confident, when you will believe that you are beautiful the world too will realise that you are beautiful but it all starts with your own self.

Let's cherish our reality, let's cherish our imperfections, let's cherish our tainted skin, let's cherish our pimples, let's cherish our skin pores, let's cherish our hairy arms, let's cherish ourselves.

Let's cherish being humans, let's cherish being ourselves.
