Sensitive skin is inherently frustrating to maintain and even more so when makeup is involved. Regardless of whether your skin is dry, oily, or combination, there are a few essential practices and tools that can often make the difference between battling with your sensitive skin and being at peace with your face.

1. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is composed of a distillation of the leaves, twigs, and bark of the witch hazel plant. The benefits to skin are numerous, but it is the astringent and anti-bacterial properties that have the most resounding effect on sensitive skin. Tannin's in witch hazel tone and refresh the skin, reduce inflammation, and help to fight bacteria that may get trapped in pores. Use it after morning face washing and prior to applying a moisturizer.

2. Sunscreen

Extremely sensitive skin tends to react poorly to many of the typical sunscreens available at gas stations and convenience stores. Research the ever growing variety of natural sunscreens with various levels of SPF and pick the one that suits your tastes. I have found luck with the Alba line of natural sunscreens, but there are multitudes available. Check with your local Whole Foods as they have a wonderful selection and you can try them all right there in the aisle to find the best one for your skin.

3. Hypoallergenic Make-up

There is an ever increasing awareness of the effects of make-up on sensitive skin and major brands have answered the call with lines of hypoallergenic make-up that have been thoroughly tested by dermatologists to ensure the least possibility of an allergic reaction. VMV Hypoallergenics and Clinique are two brands that rank in the top ten list of hypoallergenic make-up producers, with VMV poised to become the leader in allergen free make-up.

4. Coconut Oil

The oil from this magnificent fruit is a wonderful make-up remover that will not irritate the skin or eyes in the case a bit gets in while removing pesky eyeliner and mascara. In addition it provides a mild conditioning treatment to the skin before washing any remaining make-up off with gentle soap and warm water.

5. Replace Make-up Frequently

All eye make-up should be thrown away and replaced at least every 3 months, while foundations and blush can go about a year. The reason behind this is that make-up is easily contaminated, readily grows bacteria, and typically begins to deteriorate once opened.

6. Wash Make-up Brushes Often

Brushes need to washed in warm soapy water or with a specially formulated cleanser for make-up brushes at least once a week if not every time they are used. It may seem excessive but even with new make-up, a dirty brush can cause all sorts of surface skin and eye infections. People who have extremely sensitive skin should take all available precautions and the simple act of cleaning brushes after every use eliminates a major factor in skin irritation.

7. Wash Your Face

Face washing is essential to keeping a clear complexion and avoiding irritation from leaving products and residue on your skin for too long. Use a mild, herbal soap that is packed with moisturizers. Wash your face morning and night without exception, it is your first defense against irritated or acne prone skin.

8. Moisturize

Skin on the face and neck is thinner, more sensitive, and prone to dryness and irritation. A quality moisturizer that is used consistently will work wonders. Well moisturized skin will not absorb make-up and that makes it less prone to react to chemicals within the products. In addition, moisturizing helps prevent your make-up flaking off or cracking.
