Heather Newgen is a journalist based in Los Angeles and is the founder of The Voluntourist—an online platform that inspires others to give back while traveling in a responsible way. I spoke with Heather about her must-have skincare products she takes while jet-setting around the globe and here’s what she had to say.

“As an entertainment reporter and frequent traveler, looking and feeling good is vital to my success. While it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it’s also important to have a good skincare routine, but not just for vanity reasons. Skin is one of our largest organs and it helps protect us from harmful environmental elements. In order for our skin to effectively do its job, it needs to be cared for and nurtured. And as we get older, our skin changes so I’ve learned to listen to what it wants and not be afraid to change products. Many think you have to spend hundreds of dollars to have amazing skin, but you don’t. Everything I use you can find at your local drugstore. That said, here are the top items I always have with me while traveling.”

Sunscreen

Heather wears sunscreen daily and will not leave the house without it. When she doesn’t feel like wearing makeup, Heather uses a tinted moisturizer by Neutrogena that has sunscreen. In addition, wear foundation that has an SPF of at least 30. Right now, she is using Dior Diorskin Forever Perfect Foundation, which she loves because it gives great coverage, but it’s not heavy. And if Heather is at the beach or in the sun a lot, she wears at least 50 SPF.

Say, 'Yes To' Cucumbers

Heather likes the “Yes To” brand, especially their cucumber line, because the products are 95 percent natural and don’t have any toxic ingredients or parabens. Plus, they are made with recyclable materials. She enjoys both their makeup remover wipes and daily cleanser.

Moisturizer

Aveeno Body Lotion with SPF 15 is what Heather uses to moisturize her face after cleansing it. It’s technically body lotion, but it works! Heather’s skin never feels dry.

Facial Oil

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition SPF Facial Oil. Heather uses this on the plane so that her skin stays hydrated. She also uses it at night or if she is running late to do errands because it has sunscreen. It’s not greasy and it is very lightweight.

Daily Facial Scrub

Heather has to exfoliate at least three to four times a week or her face gets really dry. Promise Organics is a new brand she has been using that she found at CVS that is made with 100 percent natural ingredients. Heather likes the scrub because it’s gentle and great for sensitive skin. The size is also perfect because she can take it on the plane!

If you give any of these products a try, please let me know your thoughts and share some photos as well! What would you rate these products?

Also, please follow Heather on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and visit her website to see how you can volunteer on your next trip! Thank you so much for reading.
