Peach fuzz on your cheeks, fine strands of hair on your stomach, hair on your toes…

It can be pretty embarrassing for some people, especially if you have dark body hair and fair skin. There are many of us who aren’t blessed with light and sparse body hair, unfortunately. So, let’s talk about it. Here are 10 methods for body hair removal:

1) Shaving

Shaving bluntly cuts hair at the surface of your skin. Because hair is cut in this manner, its regrowth will feel stiffer and thicker than before.

My opinion: Razors can technically be used anywhere on the body, but I think shaving works best on legs, underarms, and the bikini area. Don’t shave your face if you’re a woman. The bad thing about shaving is that it can cause razor bumps if you use a dull razor, and hair grows back very quickly for some people. You can also get ingrown hairs from shaving. However, it is easier to shave when you can’t grow out your body hair for waxing (ex: if it’s summertime and you don’t want hairy armpits). I recommend using a five or six blade razor paired with shaving cream if you are prone to razor bumps. It will also give you a very close shave.

2) Depilatory Cream

Depilatory creams are hair removing creams that work by weakening and dissolving hair. Examples: Nair and Veet. Learn how to use Nair without burning skin.

You spread the cream on the surface of your skin without rubbing it in, leave it on for a few minutes, and wash it off. The hair is washed off with the cream.

My opinion: it works well on your arms, stomach, legs, and bikini area. However, people can get chemical burns if they use it incorrectly (leaving it on too long or rubbing it in) or if they are allergic to it. You are putting harsh chemicals on your skin, so you may get patches of red skin for a few minutes after washing it off. Regrowth may not appear for a few days. It lasts longer than shaving, but less than waxing.

3) Waxing

Hot or cold wax is applied to a hairy part of the body and a cloth is laid on top of the wax. When the cloth is pulled off, the wax and your body hair are both supposed to come off. The hair is pulled out from its root and regrowth doesn’t appear until several weeks later. You may be hair-free up to four weeks. Continued use of waxing or any other removal from the hair’s root will cause reduced hair growth in the future. :)

My opinion: Waxing works well on any part of your body. I don’t think people should wax their cheeks and upper lip because it could encourage wrinkle formation in the long run since your skin is being pulled at. If you’re not careful, hot wax can burn you. Waxing can also lead to ingrown hairs in certain places such as your bikini zone. If you’re planning on getting waxed for the first time, you should go to a reputable salon. Also, don’t get your face waxed if you are on certain acne medicines; the wax may rip layers of your skin off. Always tell your esthetician if you are on acne medicine.

4) Sugaring= waxing, but with a paste made out of sugar. You can use it without cloth strips. It is supposed to be gentler than waxing because it does not stick to your skin; it only sticks to your hair. Sugaring pastes can be made from household cooking items such as sugar, lemon, salt, and water The effects from sugaring are the same as waxing.

5) Threading

This hair removal method is an ancient technique originating from South Asia and the Middle East. Thread is twisted and turned across hair and the hair becomes trapped in the thread’s twists. The thread slides across your skin in a quick motion and the trapped hair is pulled from its roots. It gives you the same results as waxing. Typically, threading is conducted on one’s eyebrows and face.

My opinion: This is a great way to remove facial hair. I think this method is far superior over eyebrow waxing because you have more control over the shape of your eyebrows. It can be painful, but remember that your skin has to be pulled tightly for less pain. Also, if you don’t pull, you will end up will painful cuts in your skin. Your hair will not grow back thicker because it is not cutting hair off at skin level (what happens when you shave). Instead, threading pulls hair right out of its root! Thus, this method is safe for women’s fuzzy cheek hair, mustache, and sideburns. Make sure you go to a reputable salon that is clean. Ask your friends and other people who have been to the salon to see who’s good at threading. Not everyone is good at it. You also have to be specific about what eyebrow shape you want: thin or thick.

6) Tweezing

Using tweezers, hair is grabbed and lifted right out of its root.

My opinion: this is good for eyebrows or for removing hairs that were not removing from waxing. It is possible to over-tweeze your eyebrows, so be careful.

7) Bleaching

Bleaching dyes body hair to a blond color. Bleaching is not a hair removal method. It is more like a disguise for dark body hair. It is included in this list because people tend to ask about it whenever they’re talking about body hair.

My opinion: I don’t recommend bleaching your body hair if you have dark body hair paired with dark/olive skin. In that case, having blond body hair only makes the hair’s presence more noticeable.

8) Epilation

An epilator is a device that grabs onto multiple hairs at once and pulls them out. It produces similar results as waxing and threading in the sense that hair is removed from the root.

My opinion: it’s great that these devices can be portable for emergency hair removal touch-ups. The hairs on your body can be shorter than what is required for waxing. The ouch factor is still the same.

9) Laser Hair Removal

Hair is destroyed when concentrated laser pulses are aimed at the hair follicle. It is a permanent hair removal method that requires multiple sessions, which can be expensive. The method is based upon hair texture, skin color, and hair color. Laser hair removal can leave burns and scars if it is done incorrectly. People have had disastrous results from going to technicians who didn’t know what they were doing. If you decide to have your hair removed by a laser, make sure you go to a licensed spa or salon that has good reviews. People with light skin and dark hair tend to be ideal candidates since lasers target pigment.

10) Electrolysis

This method is also a permanent hair removal method that is expensive and requires several sessions. It removes individual hairs at a time while destroying the hair follicle. A metal probe is inserted into a hair follicle and hair growth is halted in its tracks through electric energy. It is an old hair removal method, but it is effective. If people can’t get laser hair removal done, they can always get electrolysis.
