Eyelashes tend to highlight your beautiful eyes and give your makeup an instant lift. It is true, however, that some women are lucky to have thick, long lashes. Meanwhile, others have to turn to artificial techniques to achieve their desired look.

So, are your eyelashes falling out? Here are a few reasons why.

  • Old age
  • Stress
  • Poor hygiene
  • Menopause
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Chemotherapy
  • Scrubbing your eyelashes vigorously while removing makeup
  • Allergic reaction to certain makeup products
  • Overuse of eyelash extensions
  • Medical condition, such as blepharitis, hypo or hyperthyroid, psoriasis or eczema

If there are no underlying medical conditions, then thinning lashes can easily be resolved by home remedies and a few lifestyle changes.

Tips to Get Longer Eyelashes

There are two ways to restore the volume of your eyelashes – through natural remedies or artificial solutions. Read on and find out your ideal solutions.

Natural remedies

  • Green tea

Green tea is a rich source of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which is a polyphenol known for promoting hair growth. Green tea also has lots of antioxidants that help make your lashes grow longer, thicker, and stronger.

Add one teaspoon of green tea leaves to a cup of boiled water and soak for a couple of minutes. When the water is cool, apply the green tea solution to your lashes and leave overnight. Then, store the rest of the green tea mix in an air-tight container inside the refrigerator and apply once a day for three to four days.

  • Castor oil

Castor oil is 90% ricinoleic acid – which helps with hair loss and promotes eyelash growth. It also contains fatty acids that nourish your hair follicles. Mix castor oil with essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, and jasmine to make the solution more potent with lots of antioxidants.

Combine castor oil with lavender or any other essential oil. Apply it to your eyelashes with a Q-tip or mascara wand and leave overnight. Repeat every night, and you will have thick, long lashes in three months.

  • Coconut oil

Coconut oil has been used for centuries to help prevent loss of hair protein. It may be a good option for treating hair thinning and damaged lashes as well as promote re-growth.

  • Lemon peel

Lemon contains lots of vitamin A and C, with lemon peel acting as a hair growth agent.

Take small pieces of lemon peel and soak them in olive or castor oil for two to three days. Then don’t forget to apply the solution to your eyelashes before bedtime. Repeat this process three to four nights a week.

  • Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce hair loss caused by oxidative damage. Vitamin E also improves blood circulation to your hair follicles.

Take a vitamin E capsule and pop it open. Then, apply the oil on your eyelashes and leave it overnight. Just repeat these daily.

  • Petroleum jelly

Pure petroleum jelly is a great moisturizer for your eyelids. It can help eliminate eyelash mites and prevent damage to your lashes. Additionally, petroleum jelly also promotes the growth of thick and strong eyelashes.

Apply petroleum jelly on your eyelashes before you go to bed and leave it overnight. Repeat every day.

  • Shea butter

Shea butter contains lots of vitamin A and E, which can help improve hair texture and quality. It also nourishes hair follicles and speeds up hair growth.

Melt a small amount of Shea butter on your fingers and apply on your eyelashes. Then, leave the compound on overnight.

  • Massage

Massaging is known to improve circulation. Massaging your scalp regularly can help make your hair thicker and longer. Massage your eyelids gently to achieve the same results on your lashes.

Artificial solutions

  • Mascara

Mascaras enhance the look of your eyelashes. Choose mascaras that are designed not just to add length to short lashes but make them darker and stronger as well. These products often boast of jojoba, olive or avocado oil for hair nourishment.

One important note on mascaras: avoid wearing waterproof mascara.

Waterproof mascara can severely dry out your eyelashes, making them prone to falling out. You may wear them once in a while – like when going to the beach – but they are not ideal for daily application.

  • Volume lash extension

False eyelashes are a godsend to women. They are the quickest way to dramatic eyelashes when you do not have the luxury of time. A quick reminder though – if you are wearing fake lashes, make sure they are of extremely high quality, lightweight, and latex-free.

Treat your mascara and falsies like you would any other makeup product – do not wear them to sleep! No matter how tired you are, always remove eye makeup and accessories before going to bed. Leaving mascara on your lashes overnight will otherwise dry your hair out and cause breakage or thinning.
