10 Hairstyle Trends Seen in "Bridgerton"

The higher the hair, the more eligible the heir

If you haven’t heard already, Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s newest television shows that premiered on Christmas Day. Set in London in the 1800s, Bridgerton is a glammed-up regency drama sizzling with gossip and romance. It has been said that this television series relates to Gossip Girl and Jane Austen novels.

Members of royalty in the 1800s wore elegant attire: corsets, fancy ball gowns and family heirlooms in the form of diamonds and tiaras. Aside from elegant apparel, their hairstyles were also an important element of their royal look.

Real Regency Ringlets

In the 18th and 19th century, complicated hairstyles were swapped for simpler hairstyles. According to Jane Austen’s World, “Curls now framed the face and chignons replaced the complicated, almost architectural concoctions that took hairdressers hours to create.”

Chignons are a type of bun. Updos were worn during formal affairs as they appeared to be neat and classy. A simple hairdo wasn’t enough to catch the eye of an heir, so additional e;ements were added. “Hair ornaments” such as ribbon, jewelry, tiaras, flowers, feathers and gem stones were common hair ornaments used in the 1800s.

Bridgerton’s Take

The makeup and hairstylists on the set of Bridgerton did a great job at staying true to the regency hairstyles of that era while still adding trending twists. Take a look at some of the most astounding hairstyles of the cast of Bridgerton.

10 Trendy Hairstyles Bridgerton Is Brought Back

1. The Side Swept Curl

The curled ponytail, side swept over the shoulder was the most common hairstyle worn by the ladies in Bridgerton. Daphne Bridgerton wore this hairstyle frequently.

2. Wigs

Queen Charlotte is known for her notorious wigs. From colorful wigs to voluminous wigs, Queen Charlotte never repeated the same look twice. Here are a few of my favorites.

It's the braid design for me.

I love the look of this natural wig.

3. Natural Textures

Marina Thompson was notably natural. From the minute we saw her one screen, her curly hair was parted down the middle and rested on her shoulders. Throughout the season, you see Marina’s character play around with different looks such as updos and top knots.

4. Mostly Up, Some Down

One of my favorite hairstyles in this season was when Marina wore her hair mostly up, keeping a handful of ringlets down. It wasn’t quite half-up, half-down, but it worked. I hope to see more hairstyles like this throughout 2021.

The curls are popping!

5. Birds of a Feather

The Featherington Girls, especially Penelope, always had flowers and feathers in their hair. I loved how colorful the hair elements were and they always seemed to match the ball gowns.

6. Diamonds Dancing

Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury had all eyes on them as their sparkling hair captured every eye at the ball. As if diamonds weren’t enough, pearls and gem stones were other hair ornaments spotted. The queen wore a tiara with sapphire jewels that matched the droplets of sapphire in her hair. One of the Cowper girls had delicate pearls weaved into her hair as well.

7. Silver Strip

Thanks to TikTok and celebrities like Bella Hadid, in early 2020 we witnessed a lot of people dye the hairs that frame their face. Typically, blonde, blue and red were common colors, but for Lady Danbury, a few gray streaks added to her elegance.

8. Fishtails and Braids

The jealous Cowper girl with blonde hair always had a hidden agenda up her sleeve, as well as in her hair. She sported tiny braids, fishtails and weaved ribbon in her updos. I wouldn’t be surprised if her hair took the longest out of the whole cast.

9. Baby Bangs

Daphne Danbury and her controversial baby bangs: Do we love them? Do we hate them? Do they only specifically work for people who resemble the same features, such as Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn and Emma Watson? Whether we like the trend or not, Daphne’s baby bangs worked for her in every episode, even when split down the middle.

10. Framed Fringe

Big, long ringlets framed the faces of almost every character in Bridgerton. This was a notable hairstyle in the regency era. Not only does it add an effortlessly chic look to any ball gown, ringlets brought out the best in everyone.

I am excited to see the elegant looks and hairstyles in season 2 of Bridgerton! Before then, I may have to binge-read the Bridgerton book series, starting with The Duke and I.
