Even I can't believe it.

Even I can't believe it.

When I would hear of and see artistes spend exuberant amounts of money on shooting music videos, I always raised an eyebrow. The days of MTV, Trace, Channel O, and the likes of these channels that streamed music videos are behind us. Of course a number of these channels still exist, but back in the day, these channels were really the only way of hearing and seeing new music. The flashier, the better.

However, with the arrival of Youtube, we the people now had the ability to watch whatever videos we wanted whenever we liked. We didn't have to wait for our favorite video to hopefully come up on the Top 10 playlist. If we want, we search it, and we watch it.

Still, as accessible and simple as music videos have become, they haven't become any cheaper to make. A standard Clarence Peters music video cannot be reportedly shot for anything less than 5 million naira ($13,889).

So why are these artistes making these incredibly expensive music videos? Well, my guess especially after seeing the numbers I'm about to show you is: Because when it hits, it HITS. BIG. And people are able to recoup their money big time.

Of course remember that just because a video is shot by Clarence Peters or costs a lot of money, it doesn't guarantee that it will blow or make a lot of money. A clear example is music artiste, Zaina who released her song, "Sare Wale" which I actually like in 2014. The video is a Clarence Peters music video and when you watch it, nobody will have to tell you that it cost money to make.

Yet, that video garnered only 57,020 views as at the time of this publication, and generated only an estimated amount of ₦37,800 ($105).

Today, we're looking at some of the biggest songs of 2019 and how much money the artistes made from the OFFICIAL music videos uploaded to their official Youtube pages.

Before you go on, don't forget to like and follow me on Facebook so you don't miss out on any new and exciting posts I'm sure you'll love. I post every single day so I'm sure you won't want to miss it.

1. Rema - Dumebi

Rema is a new kid on the block that EXPLODED in 2019 due in major parts to the crazy success his hit single, Dumebi achieved. At only 19, the young singer has already caused such a splash and made a huge name of himself. It'll be very interesting to see how he keeps the momentum going and all the future work he'll make.

Looking at the music video of Dumebi, it's a very simple concept. High Definition, good aesthetic, but a very simple music video especially relative to other videos on air right now. However, this video as simple as it is has gone on to garner 18,789,584 views as at the time of writing this piece, generating him for a whooping estimated ₦12,512,880.00 ($34,758).

Crazy! One video alone and this boy has seen more than my bank account has ever seen in its lifetime🤣.

2. Tems - Try Me

Speaking of new artistes who stormed the Nigerian airwaves last year, alternative singer Tems came and she DOMINATED with her hit song, Try Me.

There is no radio station, Nigerian playlist, or television channel that didn't play this song last year. Her music video which I personally really like went on to garner 1,731,809 views and has generated Tems a whooping ₦1,153,440.00 ($3,204) revenue.

Not bad at all for an up and coming artiste like herself.

3. Fireboy DML - Jealous

Still on the topic of new artistes, another boy who has stormed Nigerian airwaves is Fireboy DML. He released his hit song "Jealous" and that song has gone on to enjoy massive airplay, replays, shares, and a good amount of views on his Youtube page.

As at the time of writing this article, the video has garnered 7,105,736 views generating an estimated total of ₦4,732,200.00 ($13,145) for Fireboy.

Very impressive numbers!

Now, moving on to some heavy weights in the game:

4. Tiwa Savage - 49-99

When Tiwa Savage released 49-99 as her first official major international single, fans went wild. Especially because of the very crisp and entertaining music video that screamed budget!

From the different number of set arrangements, outfit changes, the quality of the cameras used, the types of shots...there is no doubt that money was put down for this video. And it looks like that spending might have paid off because the music video 49-99 went on to generate 9,523,991 views giving Tiwa and her team an estimated ₦6,342,840.00 ($17,619) in revenue.

5. Burna Boy - Anybody

Last year was the year of Burna Boy. The Nigerian singer enjoyed so much success from his singles Ye and Anybody, as well as the wide critical acclaim that his album African Giant generated.

The Anybody video that consisted of body paint, backup dancers, and interesting lighting got viewers watching. In fact, the video went on to gather 25,060,404 views generating Burna Boy ₦16,686,720.00 ($46,352).

A real African Giant indeed!

6. Wizkid - Joro

Wizkid was relatively quiet last year. But the one major offering he gave us, Joro, went on to do AMAZING numbers. Wizkid's popularity and demand are nothing to be argued because his numbers truly make my head spin. This song went on to gather 34,761,492 views generating a head-turning estimated ₦23,147,280.00 ($64,298).

Ridiculous! Simply crazy!

7. Davido ft Chris Brown - Blow My Mind

Arguably one of the best songs from last year, and (to me) unarguably one of the best international collaborations we've ever gotten, Davido DELIVERED everything we wanted when he collaborated with American singer, Chris Brown, on the smash single Blow My Mind.

The infectious tune was played everywhere and made it to everybody's playlists. And the music video for the song did also as amazing. By far, the largest number on this list goes to this music video which went on to garner 43,934,194 views generating Davido a WHOOPING ₦29,257,920.00 ($81,272) in revenue.

Yes Davido. This one blows my mind!

THAT'S ALL.

Which of these ones surprised you the most? In case you're wondering how I came up with the numbers, I employed the use of Youtube and Google Adsense information, as well as online tools to generate numbers that are as close to accurate as possible. I even tested the algorithm on some of my own videos and then compared the numbers to my actual revenue numbers...both numbers were off by only 0.03%. So I trust that the estimates above are solid estimates.
