XXL Officially Unveils Their 2026 Freshman List
Iconic hip-hop magazine XXL has officially revealed its Freshman List for 2026, and it includes some massive up-and-comers.

You know you’re getting old when you look at the XXL Freshman class and have not a clue who these people are….
In the coming days, I will be listening to theur music, but for now, I’m just going to keep going with my New York boom bap from the nineties and the snap rap from the mid-2000’s.
All of these artists seem poised to take over the game, but will they stand the test of time? What will Sosocamo do to perfect the game? How will Trim fare when it comes rhymes bad breaks?
What’s beautiful is that XXL is still breathing, though it might be on a respirator. Nevertheless, its Freshman Class picks are akin to the now virtually dead Source Five Mics ratings.
Every artist on this list deserves a placement for their own selves. Obviously, they’ve made a mark on the Interwebs. All of them have been streamed and should be applauded for their tech savvyness.
All have been born either right before the events of September 11, 2001 or thereafter. They have little or no recollection of that day except through news footage or stories told to them. It is important to note the way they came into this world and what the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran have shaped everything around them.
For their rhyming skills, they have championed the idea that they can be recognized for their efforts. Will they own their publishing and master recordings? Will they become global superstars and burn out or fade away?
What will be their legacy? JAŸ-Z is still very much a factor although he’s been in the game for over thirty years. I hate to say “who will be the next….” That’s corny. I’m just saying there should be a dominant figure amongst the twelve of them.
Are they trying to make a quick buck and get out hip hop to act or star in a reality show? What has been a source of contention is the fact that people are in a tizzy over the lack of lyric-driven MCs. I like rap as those thst can ride the beat and convey message, even if they’re not wearing a kufi and facing the east five times a day. Like with Waka Flocka Flame, he grabbed Lex Luger who provided the bulk of his debut album Flockaveli. That’s what real hip hop is about. To just lay down lyrics that remain potent if not particularly poignant.
What will be their trajectory? Will they ascend the high walls of fame and fortune and get to enjoy the fruits of their efforts?
What lies ahead of them? Will they go through label drama? Few people live in the recording industry unscathed by the trappings of stardom. Whose concert will be shot up? What artist will be found dead by overdose on pills?
It’s tough to say all of that, but just going off of all that, it’s already happened in the rap realm. It is a very possibility that eighty percent of the names will be forgotten, sentenced to prison, or lose their earnings.
Let’s be hopeful for a moment. If they lacked talent they wouldn’t have been selected in the first place. Their talents told such a superb story the editors couldn’t deny them. If Hurricane Wisdom and Skrilla can hold onto their mainstream success, they will be titans amongst their peers. The time for them to shine is now as they have such a chance to excel at their craft. If their fire rhymes continue to paint pictures in the minds of the hip hip faithful, we will see a groundswell in ability for a new generation to rise.
All of their specifics in how to keep going in a cesspool is something that these young people should realize for themselves.
XXL is hanging on by a a string and this list might be prophetic or deceiving. It might be a predictor for the most part. The 2014 Class seemed recognizable as I pointed out six out of eight people who had middling to signficsnt success. Of course, we can’t use a crystsl ball and see if these artists will be the best sophomore, junior, or senior rappers in the game.
But we can say one thing for sure, they are new and that means fresh blood is pumping through hip hop. As long as there is a class that will be looked at as executives in their own right in the company called rap, they just might have an opportunity.
Their capabilities should not be compared to Hov. Absolutely not. But they can bake their own pies for their careers and aspire to get on his level one day. The possibility for them to become megastars is now at hand with this list. It should take them enough time to hone their skills.
If all goes in their favor, they won’t have to worry about residual deposits coming once in a while. They’ll be brand ambassadors and live the high life of rhyme and commerce. They’ll propel their lives even further. Salute to the 2026 Freshman Class.
