Wayward Sparrow Releases Self-Titled Single Ahead of Upcoming Album "Devil by my Side"
Self produced Detroist based artist Rick Clark introduces a stripped down, narrative focused Americana project.

Songs come from all kinds of places. Some are carefully constructed over time, some arrive quickly and almost fully formed and others begin with something much simpler - an idea, a style or the desire to try something and see where it leads.
“Wayward Sparrow,” the latest single from Rich Clark’s independent project of the same name, feels like one of those songs that began with intention and allowed itself to stay unforced from start to finish.
“Wayward Sparrow” is the namesake of the project and was primarily inspired by a desire to write a bluegrass influenced song built around narrative storytelling.
Lyrically, it tells the story of an innocent young girl who accidentally wanders down the wrong path. There isn’t a direct thematic connection between the song and the project name itself. According to Clark, it was more a matter of finding something that felt right when it came time to name the project, with Wayward Sparrow ultimately standing out as the strongest and most fitting choice. Musically, the track is also the most rhythmically driving moment on the record, featuring subtle but engaging vocal harmonies that add texture and act as a kind of “ear candy” without pulling focus away from the story.
What’s striking about the track is how much it achieves without overloading the arrangement. While the broader Devil By My Side album leans more heavily into atmospheric acoustic production, “Wayward Sparrow” introduces a sense of forward motion that gives the song its shape and momentum. The acoustic guitar carries the rhythm. Everything else is built around it carefully: small additions, like the layered harmonies, come and go like passing details rather than structural elements. It creates a sense of movement without ever breaking the stripped-back identity that defines the project as a whole.
This style is not accidental; it’s central to how the music is made. Each song on Devil By My Side was self-recorded and self-produced by Clark, who made a deliberate decision early on to invest his time into learning the craft of recording rather than relying on traditional studio environments. It's this choice that shapes the entire identity of the record. It doesn’t aim for pristine, high-gloss production, nor does it disguise its edges. Instead, it exists in a space that feels more immediate and personal: honest in its execution, and entirely self-made.
Clark has described his approach simply: “I create music mostly for myself because I enjoy writing. That said, I hope people connect with these songs as something made passionately and genuinely - something they want to return to and listen to again.”
That sentiment sits at the core of Wayward Sparrow. The project is not built around perfection, but around instinct. It’s music that allows silence to exist alongside sound, where slight imperfections are not edited out but left in as part of the character of the recordings. In that sense, the songs feel less like constructed products and more like captured moments.

Artist Bio
Wayward Sparrow is the independent project of Detroit based singer-songwriter Rich Clark. He began his musical journey as a heavy metal guitarist, drawn to the precision, intensity and energy of the genre. Over time, his influences have expanded into country, folk and Americana, where he became increasingly drawn to the storytelling traditions and the power of stripped-down performance.
That shift ultimately shaped the identity of Wayward Sparrow. The project focuses on sparse, narrative driven songwriting where voice, acoustic guitar, and atmosphere take precedence over layered production or studio polish.
All music under the Wayward Sparrow name is self-recorded, self-produced, and self-funded. Clark’s approach reflects a long term commitment to learning the craft firsthand and maintaining full creative control over his work.
