Wayward Sparrow Brings the Stories of "Devil By My Side" Into Focus with Powerful Music Video

A slow burning interpretation of Wayward Sparrow’s darkest track.

A good music video shouldn't explain a song. It should deepen it.

That's exactly what Rich Clark achieves with the new visual for "Devil By My Side," which is the title track from his debut album under the Wayward Sparrow name. The video expands on the emotional world of the song, giving its central themes space to be explored without losing any of the ambiguity that makes the writing so compelling in the first place.

Released alongside the recently unveiled album, Devil By My Side occupies an important place in Clark's catalogue. It's the song that best captures the landscape of the record. Across the album, Wayward Sparrow explores people living with regret, isolation, temptation and loss but nowhere do these ideas feel more concentrated than here.

Although addiction sits at the heart of the narrative, Clark has repeatedly explained that the song is not autobiographical. Instead, it draws on fiction to explore emotions that are all too familiar.

The accompanying video understands that less is often more. Instead of relying on dramatic storytelling or cinematic tracks, it mirrors the song through carefully considered imagery and pacing. The visuals move alongside it, reinforcing the tension already present in Clark's lyrics while leaving enough unanswered questions for the audience to bring their own interpretation.

Musically, "Devil By My Side" continues the aesthetic that defines the wider scope of the album. Acoustic guitar remains the foundation. Small production details emerge gradually rather than announcing themselves. It's a style that reflects Clark's admiration for artists who can hold a room with nothing more than a voice, a guitar and a story worth listening to.

Clark says:

This is the album title track, and it has a professionally shot video. Both paint a picture of bleak desperation, failure, lack of control, and lack of remorse. All things that stem from addiction. While I hope that the track feels lived in for listeners, none of this is actually a biography. For me to put a song on an album, I have to love it myself. There won't be any filler on any of my releases. I felt strongly that this track was the right one for the music video.

This philosophy extends to the recording process itself. Each song on Devil By My Side was recorded and produced by Clark, who made the conscious decision years ago to invest his time in learning the music recording rather than relying on commercial studios.

Clark has described this record as the album he had always wanted to make but never previously felt ready to release. Listening to it now, that feels justified. The songwriting is assured, the performances feel completely invested, and there is a consistency of vision that runs from the opening track to the closing notes.

The video for "Devil By My Side" reinforces this vision by quietly extending the story, and adding another layer to an album built on thoughtful writing and carefully observed characters.

In a musical landscape where so much visual content exists simply to grab attention for a few fleeting seconds, Wayward Sparrow has created something that asks a little more of its audience. Watch it once and you'll understand the story. Watch it again, and you'll begin to notice the details hiding between the lines.
