As AI continues to rapidly evolve and permeate various aspects of our lives, it becomes imperative to recognize the unforeseen risks and challenges it presents. With insights from tech expert V. Venesulia, we will navigate the complex landscape of AI and its impact on different sectors. By raising awareness and understanding, we aim to empower readers in making informed decisions about AI.

If someone were to ask you who is V. Venesulia Carr, what would your reply be?

V. Venesulia: That is such an interesting question. We all have roles in life, in families, work, home, friendship circles, and society. We can and do take on titles, labels, and characteristics of ourselves, but we are all — every one of us — so much more than any one definition. Here is what I can tell you. My family says I’m independent, brave, and determined. My team members say I’m optimistic, meticulous, and strategic. My friends say I am loyal, loving, and encouraging. For me, I wake up every day with the intention to be an ever-evolving, ever-expanding unstoppable force of love, light, strength, and good, and I try to share those gifts with the people I love and encounter. I truly believe we are much more than any title, definition, label, attribute, or virtue we or others can place upon us.

You have a diverse range of knowledge in various sectors. What would you say is your true passion?

V. Venesulia: I have many passions so it’s hard to narrow it down to one thing. One of my great passions is researching emerging technologies and cybersecurity awareness. However, if I dig deeper, I would say that undergirding everything I do is my passion for learning and sharing. In every area of my life, whether it’s with my Newsmax column, Infosector with V. Venesulia, my television show Down to Business with V., my podcast on The Alive Podcast Network or via my consulting company Vicar Group, LLC, I am always learning and sharing what I know to benefit others. From technology insights to faith to life lessons to the gift of music and the arts, I eagerly learn and happily share. That is definitely a huge passion.

As an expert in Artificial Intelligence, what would you say are some AI risks we face now or could face in the future?

V. Venesulia: Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies have gained significant attention, leading to widespread awareness among the public. However, I have closely monitored these technologies well before establishing my consulting firm Vicar Group LLC in 2015. I am particularly concerned with technologies capable of producing deepfakes, which are driven by artificial intelligence technology and can have profound implications.

To address the potential impact of deepfakes on the public, I wrote an article for my Newsmax column, Infosector with V. Venesulia, Lawmakers Must Rush to Protect Us from Deepfakes. In the article, I highlighted the use of deepfakes in a benign manner during a performance of American Idol. While the performance was terrific and undoubtedly captivated the audience, I felt uneasy. The upside of the demonstration was that it exposed millions of Americans to the existence of the deepfake technology, its entertainment capabilities, and also to its more sinister potential to create fabricated and deceptive portrayals of people saying or doing things they never actually said or did.

Once the technology’s availability and potential are widely known, there is a risk of utilization by individuals whose moral and ethical compass may not align with the highest standards of conduct. In other instances, it could be used by those who don’t grasp the damaging impact their creations can have on the lives of others. The potential for misinformation and disinformation in the political realm is also particularly alarming, but deepfakes can adversely affect ordinary citizens in other ways.

In June 2023, the FBI issued a public service announcement cautioning that explicit deepfake content of citizens of the general public is being disseminated across the internet, often without the victim’s knowledge. Once released on the web, deepfake content becomes challenging to recall or to remove. The issue is not limited to celebrities and politicians but also impacts everyday citizens, making it even more pressing. Lawmakers and legislators must carefully examine the legalities surrounding the misuse of this technology. Without it, victims won’t have a legal defense to protect themselves, and as technology advances and becomes more sophisticated, deepfakes will become harder to detect.

What positive potential does AI have in our current climate?

V. Venesulia: AI technology can improve how we do things, create process improvements, streamline what we’re doing, accelerate the speed at which we do them, create efficiencies, and help improve cyber safety. I champion those. I like the applications of AI when we speak of harnessing it for good, automating mundane tasks while leaving more complex tasks for human involvement. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have assumed pivotal roles in our day-to-day activities, permeating various facets of modern life. Many of our routine activities now bear the indelible imprint of these transformative technologies. We interact with service providers, where sophisticated machine learning algorithms orchestrate dialogues and then seamlessly connect users to human representatives.

The current conversations surrounding artificial intelligence surpass its conventional utility as a mere customer service adjunct. Discourse has now ventured into contemplating the emergence of AI sentience and consciousness, signifying the potential transformation of AI into a form of intelligence that surpasses its utilitarian roots.

What boundaries should we be establishing around our use of artificial intelligence?

V. Venesulia: At this juncture in human history, we are amidst an extensive digital transformation, where the utilization of AI technology is gaining momentum and is poised for even wider adoption in the very near future.

It is incumbent upon us to be aware of its potential applications, establish robust safeguards, and conscientiously evaluate the ramifications of its deployment, both in terms of timing and method. Additionally, we must thoroughly assess how the integration of AI will impact professional pursuits and work to strike a delicate balance of ensuring gainful employment for individuals as we endeavor to streamline operations. Humans will always bring a unique value that AI can’t replace.

For anyone who may not think AI is a big deal right now, what would you like to say to them?

V. Venesulia: Everyone has a right to their thoughts and opinions on any topic. Some may not think AI is a big deal others may beg to differ. Plenty is being said about the pros and cons of AI by creators, subject matter experts, reporters, and thought leaders to substantiate its impacts on humanity in both a positive and negative way.

People like Elon Musk, employees of major tech giants like Google, and other big names within the industry that are familiar with AI and know its capabilities beyond what the average person sees, hears, or understands, are expressing concerns. It’s wise to take note. Even then, some may not think it’s a big deal. We remain vigilant, nevertheless.

I encourage people to take a stand for causes that are important to them. A sector of the population might need to be made aware of what they think is important and want to bring awareness to. We need to hear their voices on those issues. Those of us keeping a pulse on what is happening with technology and artificial intelligence will continue to be a voice in this sector.

Lastly, we would ask what are your hopes for AI as it continues to develop.

V. Venesulia: I don’t have hopes for AI in and of itself, but I do have hopes for humanity. My hope is that men and women of integrity and conscience would put their God-given intelligence to its highest and best use and deploy the technologies we have at our disposal in favor of society, to help humankind, and be a force for true and lasting good.
