"Universal Master" - MASSEY Transforms Anger into Rock N' Roll Redemption
The hardest-rocking track on "Reason For Being" finds MASSEY taking aim at unchecked power with fire, fury and a whole lot of volume.

There are times when a song feels as though it has been waiting to be written. “Universal Master (Mr. Businessman)” has that feeling. From the moment MASSEY comes charging in, there is something simmering beneath the surface, a sense that patience has finally run out and somebody is about to say what needs to be said.
This is MASSEY at his hardest and heaviest, moving away from the funkier grooves and theatrical soul of some of his other material and heading straight into hard rock territory. The song carries the kind of dark, brooding weight that naturally invites comparisons with Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” and Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused”, but there is still something distinctly MASSEY about the way it unfolds. MASSEY's vocals are not simply singing the words, it feels like a confrontation.
And the target is clear. “Universal Master” is fuelled by growing anger towards the ultra-powerful, those who have accumulated influence and wealth and continue to push their advantages as far as they can. There is nothing particularly subtle about the indignation, but that is part of the point. This isn't a song interested in politely raising an objection. It wants to turn the volume up.
Listen in here:
Peter Oravetz’s guitar is crucial to that approach. His playing has a searing quality that gives the track much of its bite, answering MASSEY’s vocal attack with riffs and lines that sound as though they are dragging the song towards some inevitable breaking point. The relationship between the two is what gives the track its tension, with voice and guitar effectively sparring their way through the song.
Yet for all its fury, “Universal Master” doesn't finish where it began. The anger eventually gives way to something more cathartic, with both vocals and guitar driving the song towards a sense of redemption. MASSEY isn't simply wallowing in resentment. The rage becomes fuel, and the final release feels earned.
Within Reason For Being, it adds another dimension to a project that has never seemed particularly interested in staying inside one genre. MASSEY can move from funk to soul, rock and cinematic drama, but here he strips things back to something primal: a big guitar, a forceful voice and something worth being angry about.
Play it loud. Really loud. “Universal Master” is built for that moment when the speakers start shaking and righteous indignation becomes its own kind of release.

About MASSEY
MASSEY is the brainchild of producer JoeBaby Michaels, who says the project arrived “fully formed” with its own swagger, soul and story. At its center is a frontman unlike any other. MASSEY doesn’t play traditional instruments but instead vocalizes entire arrangements in a James Brown style approach, humming basslines, scatting horn parts, whistling hooks, and sketching out the heartbeat of each song before his collaborators bring it to life.
That collaborative spirit is key. MASSEY works closely with longtime writing partner and guitarist Peter Oravetz, and together they draw deeply from New Orleans funk, gospel, and soul while injecting rock grit and retro R&B swagger.
This synergy has already produced a string of striking singles, from the climate-action anthem “(Never) 2 Hot” to the voodoo soaked “Tattoo My Heart” and the cinematic rush of “BOOKIN'’”, each pairing MASSEY’s unmistakable voice and vision with adventurous arrangements.
The results have resonated quickly. With more than 5 million combined YouTube views on his first video releases and a steadily growing following, MASSEY has built a reputation for full bodied tracks and bold, visual storytelling that matches the drama of the music.
