The perfect November playlist

What’s better than sitting on a couch with a cup of tea beside you and a good book on your lap while it rains outside? Doing it while some awesome music plays in background, that’s what. I decided to go through my collection of records and tried to pick the best soundtrack for the perfect autumn day, the results are as follows:

10 "Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea" by Passenger

Passenger's seventh studio album is probably his most authentic and touching and even though the songwriter's style was always beautifully and delicately thought, I believe "Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea" should be given the same attention as his infamous single "Let Her Go" if not more. The album draws inspiration from a variety of emotions and life changing experiences, the most prominent ones being the passing of time and the desire to get lost, as well as the changes for better or for worse that relationships have to endure.

This album should be played all at once, no song should be skipped just like no chapter in life can be passed over. The raw feelings in each note, lyric and melody will take your breath away.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Somebody's Love"

9 "Ghost Stories" by Coldplay

This album is, in my opinion, incredibly underrated considering how much of a full experience it really is. The style of the record is more stripped down compared to Coldplay’s usual upbeat rhythms, despite what the very successful single “A Sky Full of Stars” might lead you to believe. The sound is magical, dreamy, melancholic and soft, which makes this album perfect for a cold November night

Most Autumnal song on the record: "O"

8 "Cleopatra" by the Lumineers

The Lumineers’ sophomore album is one of the best things you will ever get to listen to in your life. Thank me later for telling you that. Their first album was very charming already and I've kept an eye on them since then to see where their load would lead them, and I think it will be very hard for them to beat "Cleopatra." The record analyzes the topic of love in an unique way and uses metaphors to explain analogies in the storyteller's experiences to very well known tales such as the Hamlet one on their song "Ophelia," making a very personal experience become universal in a matter of seconds.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "My Eyes"

7 "Oh My Messy Mind" by James Bay

This one is not an actual album, but rather an extended play. However, I couldn’t not include it in this list as it’s one of my favorite things ever and the atmosphere it's crafted on perfectly resembles a November morning, even better if it's spent walking in the fog. The album talks about love in many of its most difficult features: letting it into your life and letting go of it when it's too late to fix it. James Bay, as usual, does a wonderful job writing lyrics that conquer the listener's heart, as listening to this record feels like writing into your diary or talking to your best friend.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Bad"

6 "Under My Skin" by Avril Lavigne

We all know how iconic young Avril was, and her sophomore album is no exception, but it’s particularly great as an Autumn album as the undertones are dark and more mature compared to its predecessor “My World.” The record offers an overall negative perspective on relationships, in a way that reminds you to never settle for less than what you deserve, and Avril is incredibly talented at remaining vulnerable while also not taking any nonsense from boys. She also dedicates a touching and heartbreaking ballad called "Slipped Away" to her grandfather who passed away as she was still touring to promote her first album.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Don’t Tell Me"

5 "Cigarettes After Sex" by Cigarettes After Sex

Do I even need to introduce this album? Probably not, but in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, Cigarettes After Sex are a relatively new born American ambient pop band, and "Cigarettes After Sex" is their first record. Since this record came out, they've already put out another one, I’m saying that just in case you can’t stop listening to them after giving them a go. Their style is extremely melancholic, soft and heartwrenching, with whispered yet emotional vocals. Listening to them will probably bring up a lot of memories in everyone's minds, but it will be worth it.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Sweet"

4 "Ultraviolence" by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is yet another artist who doesn't need much introduction. I like to think of her style as soft blues rock, the gloomy aura that surrounds both her as a person and her music is haunting and fascinating at the same time, even if her music isn't for everyone it's almost like the world can't get enough of her. "Ultraviolence" is the perfect name for this record, which talks about the kind of love you know is bad for you but you can't give up.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Brooklyn Baby"

3 "Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent" by Lewis Capaldi

I wanted to say that Lewis Capaldi is also a newborn artist, but actually that would be far from the truth despite his debut album being less than seven months old, because the lead single "Someone You Loved" became a smashing hit almost immediately and went number one in the US, definitely not an everyday thing for a Scottish artist. Everyone knows who he is at this point, and the success is definitely well deserved, his warm and rough powerful voice has us all under his spell, and his slow ballads about heartbreak and loneliness make the record a perfect companion on rainy days. Even more so if you’re going through a breakup.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Lost On You"

2 "Red" by Taylor Swift

We all knew this was coming, didn’t we? Taylor Swift was proclaimed queen of autumn by her fans, which I wholeheartedly agree with and I think you will too after listening to Red if you haven’t already. The name of this record is extremely fitting, listening to it is like taking a long walk in a park as leaves crunch under your shoes while the sun sets in front of you and hides behind the trees spreading a warm red light through the city you live in. Too specific? Probably, but trust me on this one.

Most Autumnal song on the record: "Treacherous"

1 "21" by Adele

Adele is the number one queen of heart wrenching ballads and we all know that, but her album 21 is not only the perfect post breakup cure, but also an ode to the complications of young love, even the kind you can't seem to get over no matter how much you try. It's a reminder that, no matter how much some experiences might hurt us, they're still worth living and they can help us create our masterpiece.
