The Allegations: Misleading Investors for Profit
Police seek warrant for Bang Si-Hyuk over allegations he illegally gained millions in investor fraud scheme

The founder and chairman of HYBE, the entertainment agency behind global K-pop superstars BTS, is facing a potential arrest as South Korean authorities intensify their investigation into a major investor fraud case. Police have formally requested an arrest warrant for Bang Si-hyuk over allegations that he illegally profited from the company's 2020 initial public offering (IPO).
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed it has applied for a warrant for Bang on charges of violating the Capital Markets Act . The investigation centers on events that took place in 2019, a year before HYBE (then known as Big Hit Entertainment) went public .
Authorities suspect that Bang deliberately misled early investors by telling them that HYBE had no plans for an IPO or that it had been delayed . Acting on this false information, they were persuaded to sell their shares to a specific private equity fund (PEF) reportedly connected to his associates .
Investigators believe that after HYBE successfully listed on the stock market, the value of those shares soared. Bang is accused of having a secret side deal with the PEF, entitling him to approximately 30% of the post-IPO profits from the sale of those shares .
The Scale of the Profits
Police estimate that Bang may have illegally gained around 190 billion to 200 billion won (roughly $129 million to $136 million) through this scheme . If found guilty of securing gains exceeding 5 billion won, the Capital Markets Act carries a penalty of life imprisonment or a minimum of five years in prison .
The Investigation So Far
The probe into Bang has been ongoing for several months. The timeline includes:
December 2024: Financial regulators began examining the allegations .
July 2025: Police raided HYBE's headquarters and the Korea Exchange .
August 2025: A travel ban was imposed on Bang to prevent him from leaving the country .
September - November 2025: Bang was questioned by police on five separate occasions .
December 2025: A court approved the provisional seizure of Bang's HYBE shares, valued at approximately 156.8 billion won .
The investigation has also stirred controversy. Reports indicate that the U.S. Embassy in Seoul sent a letter to South Korean authorities requesting that Bang’s travel ban be temporarily lifted to allow him to attend events related to BTS’s global tour in the United States .
Response from Bang Si-hyuk and HYBE
Bang has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In a statement released by his legal team, he expressed regret over the warrant request, noting that it came "despite our full and consistent cooperation with the investigation over an extended period" .
"We will continue to cooperate with all legal procedures and make every effort to clearly explain our position," the statement read .
A Critical Moment for HYBE and BTS
The legal troubles come at a pivotal time for HYBE. The company is banking on BTS's first full-group comeback and world tour after the members completed their mandatory military service . The tour, which includes major stops in the U.S. and the UK, represents a significant opportunity for the company to solidify its global standing.
News of the arrest warrant has already impacted the company, with HYBE's share price falling by over 2% following the announcement . This development casts a shadow over the music mogul widely credited with transforming a small startup into a multi-billion dollar entertainment empire. The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office will now decide whether to proceed with formally requesting the warrant from the court .
