1. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers — and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

2. The Shining by Stephen King

Stephen King’s The Shining centers on the tormented family of Jack Torrance, would-be novelist and recovering alcoholic. Hired as the caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, Jack hopes to get away from it all and tap into his creative side by spending the long, dark winter months in seclusion. Unfortunately, as his wife and young son quickly realize, the only thing worse than being stuck in a haunted hotel is being trapped with Jack.

3. The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

The Woman in Black is a classic ghost story by Susan Hill. The story centers around a young woman, who is sent to a small town to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased client. While there, she discovers that the town is haunted by the eponymous Woman in Black. The woman is seeking revenge for the death of her child, and the young woman must find a way to stop her before she claims any more lives.

The Woman in Black is a truly chilling story, and Hill does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere of fear and suspense. If you’re a fan of ghost stories, then this is one book you absolutely must read.

4. Frost Falls by Eve S Evans

IN 1958 THERE WAS A FIRE…

Some say the fire claimed the lives of those that died inside. Others say it was the reason several people jumped from windows and balconies to their deaths… Then you have the rumors… rumors that witnesses did not see a fire at all. Only terrified people jumping to escape something horrifying… but what?

Eva loves a good ghost story, Madison not so much. In need of a best friends getaway the two embark on the town of Frost Falls just in time for the grand re-opening of its newly renovated hotel…

The former hotel of horrors.

Not long after arrival the two begin to feel something is amiss. Voices… strange dreams… and a journal that seems to be possessed by something demonic. Will Eva and Madison get the answers to their queries, or will they too fall victim to Frost Falls and it’s dark charm?

Two likable yet capable heroines, a sexy tour guide, and a haunted inn? Yes please. This book was full of energy and good old-fashioned sleuthing and built up to a phenomenal ending.

5. The Haunting of Gillespie House by Darcy Coates

Gillespie House is a horror novel by Darcy Coates. The novel follows the story of the Dunwich family, who move into the Gillespie House after the previous occupants mysteriously disappear. Soon after moving in, the family starts to experience strange and unexplainable phenomena.

As the family tries to unravel the mystery of what is happening to them, they come to realize that the Gillespie House is haunted by a dark and deadly force. The novel is a fast-paced and suspenseful read that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
