My First Experience with Punk Rock Bowling
Music Festivals have always been the cornerstone of experiencing bands live in a short amount of time. Dating all the way back to sixth century BC with the Pythian Games. Then being defined with the advent of an event like Woodstock in the 1960s. Now they have become a world wide tradition with endless events around the globe. Some incredibly big and popular like the annual Download Festival, which encompasses a variety of Metal, Punk, and Hard Rock acts. To something as small as say the Mad Tea Party Jam, a festival encompassing Music, art, and camping. Featuring a ton of bands that I've never heard of in my lifetime and large Alice in Wonderland architechture. Id link the actual website for you but the domain is up for sale. RIP to MTP and all hail... Beardfest? Either way there is litterally a festival for every kind of genre in existance. No matter how experimental or obscure it would appear to be. One genre that has a whole slew of them is Punk Rock. A place that is growing with live music festivals is Sin City. So one of the festivals to come out of there is the famous Punk Rock Bowling music festival. As the title suggests the event consists of 80% Punk Rock and 20% actual bowling. Las Vegas and Punk Rockers seems like something that would merge beautifully don't you think?

1. Journey to the Past from Anastasia https://youtu.be/fEL0EGnHdsk Have you ever seen the movie, Anastasia? Well, I grew up memorizing every lyric to every song from this movie. On the surface, I loved the movie because it was me… If you don’t know the story, she was a Russian orphan, and yes, I was a Russian orphan too. I was adopted when I was four by an American family.

I wonder about the power of music, and I worried about writing this story. And is it a story? Am I giving you a real narrative? I have had a very hard time with this particular piece, and I had to write down all of my material in freehand before I could even think about typing this out. And I needed a particular set of rules:

I was alone at a cafe in Seoul, Korea sometime in late June, during the dead of summer, having a hot matcha latte. I was a 23-year-old girl 6,864 miles away from home, on a solo vacation, journaling in a freshly unbolted notebook. Some eyes would widen at that scene, even with all the liberated ladies on social media documenting their solo adventures. This was the first of many solo trips to come, but the most memorable thing about that day wasn’t the foreign scenery, the faint sound of Korean baristas chatting with each other in the distance, not even the authentic matcha made with local cashew milk- it was the music. Moments after I took my first sips, I heard the unmistakable sound of a South African song: “Umahlalela” by Simmy. The song itself wasn’t familiar to me, I’d never even heard of the artist before that moment, but the tune was undeniably South African. The deep melody and rumbling beats, simply unmistakable. After a few seconds the raspy singing in Zulu began, and my suspicions were confirmed.
